I bought the Reading Reflex book. I was wondering if any parents who have used the program with their children used the Parent Support materials. Are the necessary? Do they help make the program easier to implement?
Re: Reading Reflex Parent Support Manual
I am a PG certified tutor. If I was a parent using PG at home, I think the workbook would be a big help when you get to the advanced code (where sounds are shown by two or more letters). It will help you structure the lessons. The words lists are very helpful as are many of the exercises. It will also save you from photocopying from the book or copying stuff by hand from the book. Most kids love the sound search activities where they have to read a story and highlight the targeted sound everytime they read it.
People on this board and the “Teaching Reading” board can give you a lot of help if you get stuck. Good luck!
Re: Reading Reflex Parent Support Manual
The parent support manual comes in different forms. In my opinion, the basic code manual is not worth the money unless you have a *very* young student. “Reading Reflex” is usually enough until you get to advanced code. At that point, I recommend purchasing the company’s $39 parent support manual for advanced code (I think it’s described as “for Older Readers”). This manual makes it much easier to work through advanced code systematically. I’m trained in PG, and I use this manual as a guide for ordering introduction of sounds. The manual consists of worksheets. It is not intended that *every* exercise on *every* worksheet be done. What you do is skip over anything the student already knows pretty well (80% accuracy), and just have him/her work on new sounds or sounds that need extra work. In other words, you pick and choose the worksheets to suit the child.
The $59 parent support manual includes both basic code and advanced code worksheets, and a set of manipulatives. This can be a good buy if you have a very young child. However, if you have an older child (probably 8yo and up), you can skip the manipulatives and go straight to a white board and markers. In that case, the $39 manual is enough.

I have all the materials because my son went to a PG intensive. I think they do make it easier. It follows the same program as the book but there are exercises in it which takes some of the thinking away.
