looking for expression games

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My child scored low on oral/written expression of her achievement tests. She qualifies for speech, for communication. What types of exercises do speech therapists use? How can I encourage more expression from her?

Hi Angela,
I suggest you pick up the book “Language Wise.” It has a lot of great games and information about language in general. You can get it through Amazon, almost any bookstore, or maybe even your local library.

Good luck! :-)

Games like Blurt, or other word games are good for expressive language. In addition, if you have magazines have her describe what she sees as she goes through them them. Also there is a great website that you can access on the web that has interactive games she can do with you that will help her with language.

One of my favorites is to use a whole language approach…this is what I do…Get a composition book and take some pictures and have her do a story web where she describe the picture and then writes about what she sees. I also use Read Naturally short stories with tapes and when they have met their reading fluency goal I have them write about what they learned. I also have them draw a picture in the composition book to go with their story.
