PIAT

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone ever heard of the PIAT test. The first word is Peabody. I know there is a Peabody Picture Vocabualry test. This is not the test I am referring to. This test is used to determined if a child has a LD problem in written expression. My son is currently in Grade 2 and has been labeled with this writing disability. Is that still a time of development for writing? I am open to ideas. I have heard of other tests like the TOWL but it was not used. Thoughts……….

It is the Peabody Individual Achievement Test. Checkout this site for more information: http://www.cps.nova.edu/~cpphelp/PIAT-R.html
It does test Written Expression. The TOWL is an indepth test of written expression. The child must be eight for this test. There are many components to writing: the physical act, memory for letter shape, motor memory for the actions to produce letters, retrieving what you want to write from the brain. Do a search on Dysgraphia or go to the LD IN Depth section on this site and read some of the articles in the writing section.
If the child is behind in reading their writing will also be behind. When in doubt ask for the TOWL is my feeling.
