need advice -- LONG plane trip w/ADHD son

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

here’s a NON-school question, that I’d love to hear views on. We’re planning a family vacation from the East Coast to Hawaii this summer. My 11 1/2-year old son, who’s got ADHD, is dreading the long plane trip, and I’m wondering whether it’s better to go straight there, nonstop (around 12 hours, I think), or break it up by overnighting in California, chilling out in a hotel for a while, and then continuing on to Hawaii in the morning. My son is on Adderall and his ADHD seems to be very much under control. He’s dealt well with 6-hour flights, thanks to books and comics(he’s a great reader)and Gameboy. I’m inclined to tough it out with the one long plane trip straight to Hawaii, but would love to hear from others on this board, about these two options (go straight to Hawaii vs. stop overnight, then get back on a plane the next morning), and any “best-practices” for managing ADHD on long flights. Thanks, all!

: First off, I’d say Hawaii is worth it. Hawaii is my favorite place in the entire world. Next, I’d say I’m not sure that you actually can go non-stop. But if you can, I’d get off the plane in California. 12 hour flights are grueling. From here to anywhere. If you time your flight right, he could always sleep. It’s the only way I can get through long airplane rides. Or if you could fly in the big and very expensive seats up front, then I’d go for it. But if like me you’re usually back in coach, I’d break the trip up.But when you get to LA, you don’t have to chill. You could do a quick trip to Universal City something that 11 year boys just love. Or a stop at Fatburger’s, the most interesting hamburger place in the world. If you stopover in San Francisco instead, be sure to go to Pollyanna’s, the most unusual ice cream place I’ve ever been in. 110 flavors! And don’t forget the Exploratorium!Have fun whatever you do because you just can’t help having fun in Hawaii!here’s a NON-school question, that I’d love to hear views on. We’re
