What is a suitable placement for an ADHD-Inattentive child who seems to have a math disability yet doesn’t quite meet the criteria for SLD? If it is “OHI” what does that entitle the child to: resource room, in room aid? My child is failing math and social studies, due to ADHD. She is possible CAPD but we need to have her evaluated. My question is if the school who is currently evaluating her, comes back with “eligible for special ed”, what will she get. How could they best help her weak short term memory skills, attention deficits, math weaknesses? I want to make sure she gets every possible service she needs to succeed, but not sure what it is that will help her. I don’t trust my CST to deliver the appropriate support.christy

You would need to sit down w the CST and together (“IEP team”) identify your daughter’s weaknesses and write present level of eduacational performance (one of the first parts of the iep). Then you would write measurable goals (that is tricky-how is it measurable and how are you going to evaluate progress toward meeting these goals & objectives). Services are to be individualized to give the child what he/she needs to get a free appropriate public education (they call this FAPE). They are services appropriated to meet the goals and objectives. So services and placement decisions come after goals and objectives are written. Accomadations and modifications are also put into the iep. Again these are team decisions (which means they must include the parents). Decisions regarding place and length of time of allocated services are to be in the iep. Much goes into it, and do not get pressured into signing anything to implement the iep until you find it appropriate, should your child qualify. I would not be hung up on the labels so much. If you qualify for eligibility you should get an individualized educational plan that meets your child’s needs. I am no expert, but a mom that has been through this process. I wish you and your family the best! If you need more time at the meeting, tell them you want to table the meeting and reconvene this meeting in a few days. Do not feel pressured, you have come this far, and it must have taken months to get to this point :)!Mom
