ADHD and puberty

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone see negative ADHD related behaviors worsening as their child reaches puberty? My son is 10 and is becoming more aggressive and abusive towards me and my daughter lately. I’m wondering if he is going through some hormonal change. Either way I’m fed up. Just when I think I got him figured out, things change for the worse.Jackie

: I’ve seen it work both ways. I’ve seen ADHD children become more settled as they grow older and I’ve seen ADHD children become more restless as they grow older. If your son is 10, he’s in 5th grade and 5th graders do seem to be more like teenagers than elementary school children anymore. As I teach Middle School, I see the 5th and 6th graders as the last years of true childhood anymore and the 7th graders ride the wave into the true adolescence of 8th grade. Your son is probably beginning that journey. That doesn’t mean, though, that you can’t work to set limits as to how to treat each other within the home. It also doesn’t mean that other things might not be happening in his life. You might consider talking with his teacher to see if he’s more aggressive and abusive at school too.Good luck.Does anyone see negative ADHD related behaviors worsening as their
