Thorazine ?

I’ve heard of Thorazine and it is used just as you describe - to help control implusive reactions and dangerous behaviors. It has been in use for some time.

Thank you I have not heard of it being used before.He started it today and takes it 3 times a day.I am hopeing this one workswe are on our 5 th kind of med.

Thorazine-if i remember correctly its actualy a very old medication used mostly for psychological problems. you dont say here if a regular medical doctor or a psychologist is the one that has prescribed this medication for the child. I suggest you read up on this medication and ask some questions to understand it better and how it works and what it does. i do remember that on this medication if you dont know it already that anyone taking it (especially at this time of the year heading torwards summer) that this medication causes you to be very prone to sunburns and they recommend not to have the patient in direct sunlight for long periods of time. :)

My sons psychartrist perscribed him the medicine.Now the school psy.said if this was his child he would switch doctors.Well my sons psychaiatrist wont talk with the school about my son.He is not getting in trouble at school.He is only having some bouts with a agression that his teacher sees before it becomes a problem.However at home he is very agressive and going after other kids in the neighborhood with bats and he wont stay off our roof.He even takes up his 3 year old sister with him on the roof.He does have learning problems in school and is getting fustrated with that and says he hates school.I think he is going to go off in school like he does at home soon if I dont get him the help.The school psy.makes me mad they did not want to help until I got him the apptointment after his ped. referrred him to this one.That is when they finally did LD testing on him and we found out his IQ is above 140 and he cant read simple books or write so anyone or himself can read it.He has lots of reversals.The scholl psy said that medicine is strong stuff but what I have read you can take over 2000mgs a day and he only takes 75 mg a day and the pharmacy had to order in a lower dosage pill for him and this is a large pharmacy .The pharmacist said he is on a very low dose and one of the lowest he ever filled in his 20 years.

I just have to tell you, my father took Thorazine for years when I was a child, as did many of his friends who also were patients of the VA. I have no experience with this drug in children, but I can tell you what it did to the adults around me.

At first, it was great. Thorazine was prescribed for my father’s mental problems, and helped a lot. After a couple of years though, he started slurring his words and got what we and the other guys taking it call ‘the Thorazine shuffle’. It looked like he was trying to walk through thick mud all the time. The dosage did not change, but he became listless, almost lifeless. It was like he was in his own bubble.

We know that it was the Thorazine causing this because when he was taken off of it, he went back to normal. Please research the affects on children thoroughly. This is the first time I have heard of it being given to a child and it is a very dangerous medication, even for an adult.

I’m not trying to alarm you, it’s just that I can’t stand the sight of a child acting like a mummy like my dad did.

Thank you for your infomation.I have asked about this medicine to several doctors and people in the field and they say watch him closely.And they comment he is on a rather low dosage also .I do have him a appiontment witha new psychartrist on July 23 to get another opinion since his keeps putting him on meds that I have never heard of or arent common for children.He also put my son on Trazodone to help him sleep.

My Uncle was taking Tranzadone until about a month ago. The only thing I remember the doctor saying about it was to avoid too much time in the sun because it makes the pigments in the skin more sensitive. If your child has to be outside for extended periods, use a high level sunscreen and try to keep him in the shade as much as possible.

Please let me know how it goes with the new doc. I’m going to have to do something about my son’s behavior and inability to sleep at night and would like to see what happens with your son. Good luck.

Your son’s dose does not appear to be that high. Perhaps you should bring up his bizarre behaviors when you see new pdoc. There may be another disorder such as bipolar Trazadone is prescribed for children also.

Thank you for still repling to my question.My son does take trazodone to to help him sleep but it seems to help him more than the other two.
