I have two sons with Learning Disabilities, one is ADD and the other is ADHD also. The problem I seem to be having is the PPT team seems to hold a meeting before the PPT…at this meeting everything seems to be decided even the IEP is mostly filled out…they call this meeting a Data Meeting. I was under the impression that I was part of the team not the person they give a presentation to…I have had doctors come to the meetings with me (my pediatician and my own phycologist) they seemed to be impressed with the system. I just would like to know where I can go to get my full rights. Not that Little piece of paper the school gives out. And if I have the right to demand to go to these “Data Meetings” …I would appreciate any response…Thank you
Re: meetings before the PPT
You should be able to get a copy of the sped laws at the principal’s or superintendant’s office or the head of sp ed services should have it. Our district also has a lot done prior to the meeting, but then they let me give my 2 cents and then they mesh the 2. I am never happy w the iep and then we do letter writing back and forth til I get a little something better, but the goals are never measurable, and the iep is not for the most part truly individualized.
I realized that, like you, I wasn’t getting the input I needed before the IEP was written. So I asked for a pre-meeting at least a month before the IEP meeting, to which I brought my son’s psychologist. That way, I had the input I wanted before they handed me the IEP and I didn’t have to ask for so many changes to the IEP.
