My 5th grade son has taken adderal with great success since 3rd grade. He only takes it on weekdays, no weekends, no summers. He started with 5mg daily in 3rd grade, 7.5 in 4th grade and is now on 10mg once a day.
On Saturday’s this year he is really animated and almost manically happy all day long and then has gotten up in the middle of the night almost every Saturday since school started and vomitted. Sunday am he’s fine and back to a normal activity level. Does this sound like a problem with his adderal? Has anyone else encountered this? He’s so successful at school I hate to make any changes but I’d love to find an explanation for his 2am barfs.
Re: adderal and nightime nausea
Thanks for responding - I hadn’t thought about that angle.
He’s doing great in school although it is harder for him being in 5th grade at a new school (5th grade is intermediate school in our district). In addition to his ADD he also has visual and auditory dyslexia. Thanks to lots of therapy of various kinds (and thanks to these bulletin boards for pointing me in the right directions) he is participating in a fully mainstreamed program for the first time since 3rd grade. He receives some assistance from a learning specialist on his team. He’s very proud of his accomplishments but may be struggling more than he is letting on. His Dr. suggested we give it to him for a couple of Saturdays and see if that effects the pattern. If not I’ll schedule him to see the physchologist we’ve worked with in the past.
Adderall is a short-acting medicine that is out of the system in 6-8 hours, so, if he doesn’t take any on Saturday, it seems unlikely that adderall is causing the problem. My own child used to have episodes of stomach pain and vomiting that were the result of school stress. Oddly, they would generally occur over the weekends, when you would think the stress would be minimized. I never really figured it all out, but counseling did help. Your description of your son as being manically happy on Saturdays makes me wonder. How are things going for him in school? Is there anything he does on Sunday that is stressful?
