How do I approach the subject to get a person or aid in a classroom even if it is only for math?
I have twins in the 3rd grade. One is one an IEP and is getting an aid in math and the other is not on an IEP and no aid.Last night I met the teacher of the child not on an IEP.She insisted that my daughter is failing math because she got a B on her test. She told me that my daughter can not keep up with all the A students and she will be moving alot faster then the other twins classroom. The teacher insisted that my daughter will struggle in all areas of math throughout the year.Do I have this child tested for LD? My opinion after having two on IEPs is no.Can I have this child pulled for math even though she is not on an IEP?
Re: no aids in the classroom
How on earth can a teacher say one of her students is failing because of a B on a math test? A grade of B? What am I missing?? Last time I check, a grade of B is very definitely a passing grade.
If I am understanding everything correctly, I think your child’s teacher needs an IEP of her own.
(ps I’m an LD teacher)
Re: no aids in the classroom
I think the teacher is trying to compete with the other twins teacher. In her small mind…the faster she gets the children ahead of the other rooms, the better she looks. She is setting the children up for failure and anxiety.I am writing notes to her about my child’s math progress…saving each response to approach the school.Children have rights too.
Is there any type of intensive tutoring or remdiation program at your school that is open to any student, regardless of special education status? Also, we have Title I math classes here. THese are students that have math difficulty, but do not qualify for LD services (and therefore do not have an IEP). Also, just because you have one of your students tested, does NOT mean that you have to agree to LD services, even if they are eligible for services. You must give consent for any intitial placement.
