caseload

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a resource teacher for students from K-5 that have any exceptionality. I teach in the state of Florida. I would like to hear from other resource teachers from other states regarding their caseloads. I work part time and I have about 20 students and that number will grow. I find it hard to adequately service the number of students that I have when expected to keep up with the paper work. I work at least 7 hours each work on my own time and I still feel like I’m not caught up. I know there are other teachers in my county that work full time and have caseloads aroung 40.

That is awful, Pam! I thought a resource caseload limit of 30 in NC was bad!

Hi Pam,
In Georgia it is 25, however, I know of several teachers here in Georgia who have caseloads much higher than this. They hear the same excuse we all hear… there are not enough funds to support another teacher.

I use to think I had it rough///// We average 22-26 students on our caseload and that is for full time work. I can’t imagine how anyone gets any work done with a caseload of 40. What kind of schedule do you have??? I know in several elementary schools here, teachers do pull-out or various other programs. I teach high school and I have five classes of instruction with one prep. So it is almost impossible to stay current with anything and actually teach too. It would be interesting to hear from others who teach high school in your state.

I don’t feel like I do a wonderful job with everyone, but I do my best. I do tons of paperwork on my own time. We are expected to have documentation on all goals, and I think that is important, but I haven’t quite figured out how to do the assessments so that it doesn’t take away from instruction. I try to group when ever possible, but there are times when I am teaching more than one subject at a time. I have years of experience teaching ESE, I don’t know how someone new in the field could come in and even begin to do my job with any success. I do wish things were different, because I love my job.
