Generic Adderall?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My pharmacist told me that a generic version of Adderall is now on the market, and wanted to know if I’d prefer she fill my son’s prescription with that. I declined because I didn’t know anything about it and didn’t want to change from something I know works well for my son without talking to his doctor. Has anyone had any expereince with it? Does it really work the same as the name brand?

Generic Adderall may or may not work as well as the brandname Adderall. The only way to know is to try it. There are some examples in epilepsy where a generic epilepsy drug allowed seizures to occur vs a brandname where there were no seizures. In the ADHD field there are a limited number of reports which indicate in certain instances that a brandname may work better than a generic. (Sources: Domeena C. Renshaw, M.D., Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D.). Best wishes.

My son just started using the ‘slow release’ Adderall. It’s not generic. Before, he was taking 20mg of Adderall in the morning, and then 20 mg of Adderall at lunch time. Now he just takes 40mg of the slow release Adderall in the morning. We are very pleased at the results.

I for one will not experiement with it.. Our son is taking the brand name and doing well with it.

I am sure the insurance companies are behind making the generics to save THEM money, since that seems to be their goal.

I have asked our pediatrician to always request Brand Name for everything.

I have a dilemma … I just looked at the label on the bottle of my son’s “Adderall” refill, which I picked up from the pharmacy yesterday. It does not say “Adderall.” It says “amphetamine slt cmb.” I’m assuming this is an Adderall generic (I’ll call the pharmacy when it opens). The problem is that the label is not going to match what’s on the school form. I anticipate I’ll be hassled by the school nurse if I try to drop off this new bottle of “Adderall.”

I would hope that the school nurse would accept the generic form of Adderall and not make you jump through hoops. At least for today.

Have you thought about looking into trying the slow release Adderall? It’s not generic, it is real Adderall, only in a slow release formula. My son only takes it in the morning before he goes to school. He doesn’t have to take Adderall at school any more. I am very happy with it. And my son is happy with it too.

Good luck

Several generic users have told me that the product seems to be stronger or act faster for some of them. I have also seen comments about it lasting for a shorter period of time. Has anyone heard anything else about the generic version?
