19 yr old - Army

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Greetings:
My daughter has just joined the Army. She is no longer taking her medication. Just wondering if anyone else has had an older child in the armed services.
Thanks,
Theresa

I have a cousin whose son joined last fall, he is 18 and he is add but hasn’t taken meds since he was about 10. He loves it! He plans to become a ranger. Also my husband is an army officer who was diagnosed adhd last year. He joined the marines at 18 and switched to the army during college, he has been very successful in his 21 yr marine corps/army career, he was looking for answers from the doc and some help in finishing his master’s degree when he went to the doc and was diagnosed, he doesn’t take meds either.
The military can be a great place for adhd folks, in my opinion, there is structure, fast pace, change every so often so things don’t get boring, quick decisions are necessary in a lot of situations. My brother also joined the marines when he was 17 then switched to the air force, it did a lot of good things as far as discipline as well as taught him a job he is able to do in the civilian world and feel successful. Personally as an army wife, I am proud of your daughter and wish her well. All my best.

Thanks Amy:

My husband was in the Army. My daughter and him have not always been on the same playing field but this has brought them closer together. She has just completed basic training and is starting her engineering school today. She will graduate in July. She is going to Germany. I am excited for her. She wasn’t ready for college and, as you said, the Army will give her career experience and also funds for college when she is finished.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Theresa
