Has anyone’s child been diagnosed with MVP(Mitral Valve Prolapse) and ADHD. Because MVP is a nervous system syndrome I was wondering if there could be a connection. My older adult son has MVP, which tends to run in families. My younger son has ADHD. Anyone out there made this connection?
Re: MVP/ADHD
As you are probably aware, some people with MVP experience anxiety symptoms. Anxiety can masquerade as, or accompany ADHD, so there could be some connection. Interestingly, in the 1980s there were a number of misdiagnosed cases of MVP due to a problem with the type of echocardiogram equipment used then. In some cases, what appeared to be MVP was actually only an artifact. I know about this because I was misdiagnosed at that time and only found out three years ago that I don’t actually have MVP.

Re: MVP/ADHD
There is some connection to Marfan’s syndrome and LD and ADHD. Marfan’s syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects several areas of the body. Mitral valve prolapse is probably the most common finding.
Marfan’s syndrome is seen in people who are tall and thin. It also affects the eyes and connective tissue.
Re: MVP/ADHD
Marfan’s syndrome s also is usally accompanied by the pectus excavatum issue my son had. However, he doesn’t have MVP nor Marfan’s but he does have scoliosis and the Pectus excavatum, and he is also ADD-Inattentive.
Re: MVP/ADHD
Marfan’s runs in families. It can vary in severity, some have very mild cases some very severe. If it is found in one person it is almost always found in at least some other family members.
I saw alot of people in the Cardiothoracic ICU where I used to work who had symptoms that leaned toward Marfan’s, but the doctors didn’t think they fit the whole picture.
I guess it is like so many of the “syndromes” we see in the world of LD. Some kids have some of the symptoms but don’t fit the whole picture.
Re: MVP/ADHD
This is very interesting to me. I am going to look into this a little more and keep everyone posted. Thanks everyone!!!!!!
Re: MVP/ADHD
I have read that individules with dyslexia are often found to have MVP. I have both and my two children are both dyslexic and ADD. I do not know if they also have MVP. Can anyone shed light on the significance of these co-morbities?
I have both but I don’t think they are connected….the heart and the brain are two different entities.. My ADD was around long before my MVP was diagnosed as an adult.. My kids have ADD but don’t have MVP.
My son who had a genetic defect called pectus excavatum also has scoliosis, they are both bone deformations but the UCLA surgeon who fixed the pectus defect said there is a 80% co-morbidity between the two genetic defects but that they are not related meaning that the pectus problem didn’t cause the scoliosis. but sometimes..I wonder…..
