My son starts adderall XR tomorrow

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m new to this Adderall XR…my 7 year old son has ADHD..and we will be starting him on AdderaHl XR 10 mg. tomorrow. The past 2 years of school has been a total nightmare for my husband and myself, seems we were getting called into school everyday for something our son did, or didn’t do. Now with school out his problems carried over into daycare. I tried to shut out my worst fears of ADD, but finally gave in and had him tested, and got a second opnion to only find he has ADHD. Can someone tell me about how long it will take to see changes in him, I’m praying not long…he goes back to school in 16 days.

I saw results the first morning that my son went on meds more than 3 years ago. Usually mornings had been one fight after another between him and his sister, with me trying to get ready for work while yelling. The first morning was such a PLEASURE!! I didn’t have to yell once, in fact I thought he may have overslept or fallen asleep eating it was so peaceful!! I went through the same thing, I was either meeting with the teacher and/or principal on an almost daily basis. We had a diagnosis already but were holding off until necessary for meds while working with behavior modification, and when we finally accepted that he couldn’t read and had to do something, we finally out him on meds.

It took him a year to catch up in school, but after that ended up in gifted programs. It was a wonderful experience for us. We did have to up his dose within a week because though the mornings were heaven, by lunchtime at school he was having problems. Even with the XR that can happen if the dosgae is too low, but they start with the lowest possible dose and work from there.

You should see a difference immediately. Sometimes the dosage may needs to be raised, or sometimes the medication needs to be changed. Give it some time if you don’t see a difference right away, but if you don’t see a difference shortly, call your doctor. Keep a journal of behavior with times to help the doctor if any changes need to be made. Good Luck!!

My 7ry old son started Adderall XR on Sunday at the 10mg dose. We aren’t in school yet, we start in less than 48hrs (hooray!!). I have noticed small changes: he had 2 questions Monday morning (9am) that he wanted to ask his Dad, so at 5pm he asked both questions exactly like he did at 9am. Usually he wouldn’t even remember what he wanted to ask. I also noticed him following directions much more quickly and completely. I haven’t tried sitting down and doing any type of “school” work yet (worksheets, reading, writing etc.)I’ll probably try today.

Our Dr. wants us on the 10mg for at least the first week of school to better gage how his attention is doing. He also wants us NOT to tell his teacher he’s on meds. for that first week. He wants her to know him as Kyle first, not an ADHD boy named Kyle.

Good luck! I’m right there with you!

It sounds like you are having a good experience already. I am happy to hear it. My son has been off for the summer for the first time since he went on meds in 1999 and it has been a trying summer for all of us. He goes back on Labor Day Weekend and I am soooooo looking forward to it. He has a reading assignment that is due on the first day of school that he has been having trouble with-he read the book over a months time but cannot remember details to complete a time line. He is almost having to re-read each chapter. I believe he didn’t retain anything while reading without his meds. I hope you continue to have a positive experience.

My son is 13 and having problems in school. In the morning he is more attentive, but the afternoons, the teacher has to keep redirecting him for everything. In reference to what you mentioned, about the brother and sister contstantly fighting in the morning and you yelling, I am in the same situation.
can you shed some light on the med for school? Is it time release - 1 per day or 1 in the morning & 1 on the Lunch hour?

Gabby is on the recommendation list for Adderall or Ritelin (spelling sorry). With her newly aquired diagnosis of NVLD acuqired from a brain injury a neuropsychologist is recommending this drug. I am very afraid because of all I have heard. Gabby is 9 and does not disturb a soul in class. She just drifts off and then gets lost on her work. Same at home. She is a sweetheart but just zones out sometimes and you must redirect her. To see her you would never know all her obstacles and I was hoping against hope that this was not necessary.

I wish you all the best and if I find anything I can email you if you want. Let me know. Good luck.

Fabienne
