med effects

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Wondering if you can determine how ADHD meds will affect a child by the way caffeine and sugar affect them?

Is it the same kind of reaction to a stimulant?

My son is not medicated and docs aren’t convinced he will benefit from meds because of the anxiety factor. He gets extremely hyper with caffeine and sugar. Just wondering if the affects are similar with meds?

If your son is truly adhd then stimulants would calm him, not make him hyper. If we took them, we would be hyper, lol. My daughter is totally off the wall with sugary foods and caffeine, so we avoid them as much as possible. Calm as a cucumber on meds.

Hey Little lulu,
Me Deb here, just chimming in. I just wanted to agree with Diane. My daughter and I are both taking Adderal RX, different dosages of course. We both are greatly benefited from taking it however. Personally, I am more focused, and more organized. For the first time in my life, I can read a book from cover to cover without getting tired, impatient, or distracted and jumping around, or putting it down altogether. I have a new sense of self confidence that I have no memory of having since early childhood. I have always felt like a failure, a fraud, that someone would figure out what a loser I really am. I was embarassed that I couldn’t express myself when confronted with my daughter’s learning issues and teachers who couldn’t or wouldn’t understand. With medication I feel my mind can focus, where before I would be thinking about so many different things all at once that I couldn’t really focus on any one thing long enough to be effective. I am sure you are familiar with the charateristics, but my point is, we both benefit greatly and do not experience hyperactive behavior but mental calmness, clarity, and new found confidence with our new found successes. We try to avoid sugar, etc. also, but as many a mother knows, easier said than done always. Hope I haven’t gone on too long.
Debra
