Hello! Just wanted to update you all on Josh. He has had a complete turn around in school. The first two weeks were a nightmare. Then, last Monday, his teacher called me that afternoon to let me know that she was so proud of him. He was a completely different child. He is doing his school work. He has to try very hard to keep up with the class but he is doing wonderful. There have been no behavior problems of any kind!! The only time he has difficulty is first thing in the morning. He is not a morning person and it takes about an hour for him to get into the groove of the school day.
The best part of all is that he is not on any medication!!! We are still sticking with a strick lactose free diet. I think that has made the most difference.
I have also accepted a new position with a firm much closer to home. I will no longer be on the road for 1 - 1 1/2 hours each way. I am taking a pay cut but it is worth it to spend more time with all my boys. By the way, I have 3 boys incase if failed to mention this earlier.
Anyway, we are having our evaluation meeting tomorrow afternoon with the school counselor, teacher, administrator and diagnoticition (spelling?). All in all, things are going pretty good. But if we can make them better, than lets do it!!
Thanks for listening!!
Rochelle
Re: Complete turn around
Rochelle,
Could you explain what types of symptoms your child had to lead you to think lactose intolerance might be the problem?
Did he have GI problems? I guess I am asking if you noticed other symptoms besided attention and school issues that might have lead you there.
Thanks, and Congrats,
Linda
Re: Complete turn around
Linda,
Joshua had severe reflux as an infant and toddler. He still has problems from time to time. After taking the ADHD medications for a while he just quit eating. His pediatrician recommened that we take him to a pediatric GI specialist. After hearing Joshua’s history, the doctor requested to have some test done. His test results indicated a moderate to severe lactose intolerance. We have modified his diet accordingly. The Dr also subscribed something to boost his appetite. He only took it for about a month. He started eating quite good again. He no longer takes any medication except for Prevacid for the reflux. He still eats pretty good. We are still having some ADHD issues in the classroom. But the teacher and I are in constant communication. He is making very good grades. We did have him evaluated by the school for learning disabilities and we are all in agreement that the only disability that he has is ADHD. There is no need for resource or ld classes. His teacher is allowed to make some “modifications” in the classroom for him. So far, things are going pretty well. I will not put him back on meds for ADHD. We are all learning to cope with the situation, including Joshua.

Re: Complete turn around
Rochelle,
Thanks, My son also had severe reflux as an infant but it went away when he was about 6 months.
My son doesn’t drink alot of milk, he drinks the OJ with calcium. I will try cutting out cheese (one of his main staples) and see if I see a change in him.
Linda
Thanks for sharing that a lactose-free diet is beneficial in your case. Appreciate it.
From time to time have heard of a small number of favorable responses like yours.
