school update

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to fill everyone in on my new life, and my son’s. School has been back in for 4 weeks, and I have to say since putting Jeremy on Aderall XR his life has turned a 180 here. It is so wonderful to hear him come home and talk about what he did in school.
He walks in the door from daycare, and sets right down and gets his homework done before dinner is even ready. For the past 2 years it had been a struggle to get him to do homework, but now he even beats me to the table to get it done. Most times he does it at daycare, and he always wants me to check it and make sure it is right. Seeing all the smilies, and stars on his school work is such a blessing. His teacher found a way to let me know how things are going without getting him upset. When he has a very, very good day she draws a little smiley with a halo above it in his agenda.
I think we finally found a teacher that is working well with him, and he enjoys working with. In school they us a color code for behavior. For the first time in 2 years Jeremy is still on green, and he is very head strong to keep it there.
In the 2 months of his new medication, I have seen my son mature. He has gotten out of his babyfied ways, and doesn’t cry over every little thing. This is a big plus for him, and he knows it. Daycare has always been a struggle for him. Jeremy is small for his age(7 years) and gets picked on quite a bit. Kids can be so crule to each other. Jeremy was picked on (name calling, pushed around, bullied) by just about every child in the daycare. His down fall was crying, they called him a baby, then he would throw his famous temper tanturm. This just set him up to be picked on even more. He had very few friends, because of his behavior there. Now days everyone likes him, he gets invited to Birthday parties, and outings. And most of all the name calling has stopped.
I spoke with the head of daycare just yesterday, and she is so pleased with jeremy. She too has seen him mature over the past 2 months. She stressed how polite he was when asking for something, and recieving it. He is always willing to help others do their homework (math) this child loves math. Reading and spelling has become a big plus for him now. before you couldn’t get him to spell a single word for you, and reading is so much fun. He loves it and he understands what he is reading for the first time.
I want to thank everyone here for the sopport I got, when I first came here trying to understand what was wrong with my son. I am so glad I over rode his father’s vote and got him the help he needed. Now my husband praises him for his work, instead of screaming and yelling at him every night. Thank you so much.

That’s fabulous! How wonderful for him. Our son also had an unbelievable turnaround when he began ADD medication in grade 6. It can really be a great help to some children.

Best wishes to your family!

How wonderful for you!!! Your Jeremy sounds just like my Kyle(7yrs, 48#, wears glasses) Kyle is also not having the tantrums like he used to, now they happen when most 7 yr olds would pitch a fit. He has played with his Lego’s more in the last 4 weeks than he has in the years we’ve owned them.

His school work is amazing so far, although we’ve had a problem with math this week. They do timed math tests( 90 seconds to do 20 problems), if he gets the answer, it’s 95% correct, where he has trouble is finishing all 20. Rather than distractions being the problem, it’s more a matter of him just not knowing these math facts. I bought him Turbo Math today (by Leapfrog), he played with it for 4 hrs!! He even wanted to take it to bed! He also comes right in and starts his homework, with no fuss most days. He’s brought home all A’s on his spelling tests, his penmanship looks like a different child’s, and his sentances are longer and more complex. Last spring, the last 9wks of school, it took him the entire 9wks and a mad rush the last 2 weeks of school for him to reach his Accelerated Reader goal of 6 books. So far in 4 weeks, he’s at 68% of his goal already, and has been upset because some books he’s read to test on, he took the test last year and the computer won’t let him take it again.

I could go on and on… the best part of the medication, is that Kyle is still Kyle!!
