dd is on dexadrine, tried ritalin with no luck, but dex tr is working well. These are the only 2 stimulants we have in Canada. But I heard that adderall and concerta might get approved here soon. So I am wondering if anyone can educate me alittle on both. I heard that concerta is long lasting with no ups and downs. My dd is very inattentive and super hyper. Dexadrine is fine but we still could use something alittle better.
Re: adderall or concerta
My son started Concerta this school year. We had tried Ritalin, dexadrine, and cylert with no success and horrible side effects.
The concerta is working wonderful. He has the same teachers as last year(because it’s a small school) they have all commented on how different he is this year, and they don’t know he’s on anything. I was always very against medication because of the experiences we had in the past with the others. But, I’ll have to say the Concerta has made a big difference. He even says it helps him in football. LOL
Re: adderall or concerta
my little one is on Concerta. We tried Adderall and Ritalin. The ritalin worked OK. The adderall didn’t really work at all and she had lots of side effects, appetite and sleeping and BAD headaches. she has done well on the concerta. My oldest was on ritalin a while back, before they had concerta. the longer acting Metadate (a sustained release ritalin) worked much better than the ritalin twice a day. My understanding is that Concerta is basically a short acting ritalin, combimed with a long acting ritalin. Thus you don’t have the ups and downs with regaular ritalin.
Re: adderall or concerta
You tried Adderall and it didn’t work. Try the Adderall XR and start on the new 5mg. I just found out that they now have the 5mg along with 6 total strengths so you can go up and down to find the dose that works best for you. This is a stimulant and is unable to linger in the system so I can assure you it wasn’t the medication that caused your child not to sleep it was the fact that the meds wore off. Now with the smaller dose that will help you start slower and I can almost guarantee you will have a better result. Remember not to stop short of finding the best situation because you are getting a reasonable response! I did that at first and now look back wishing I had tried it sooner!
Re: adderall or concerta
I totally disagree in drugging your children to support the Drug Companies in America.
Not only do they drug our children but adults too.
The principal at my son’s school is in agreement with me. He believes that there are other alternatives besides drugs. (Herbal, Support groups, personal praise at home). etc.
My son has gone through 2 other schools and the other 2 schools are both supported by the Drug Companies. I had complete pressure to have my son on drugs. Schools recieve money from the Drug Companies to promote them.
The principal also informed me that in latest studies of Ritalin that when children come off of the drug they experience tics (I believe this is probably when they are on it for a long period of time). I don’t think that there is enough study of this drug and they are using our kids as guinea pigs.
Check out the site gary.null.com under world issues.
I fought with the previous 2 schools that my son was in. I was even threatened if I don’t put my son on drugs.
I am very happy to find this Principal of this school who is in agreement with me. He apparently was a principal of a school with 14 special classes in it with all kinds of problems so he is very well experiences in these issue. Don’t let society pressure you into thinking that drugs are the only way.

My ds is on Adderall XR (extended release) 10mg and he gets his dose at 7am and I see results until 5-6pm. This was the first med. we’ve tried and so far we’ve been happy. I’ve got a friend who’s ds is on Concerta and likes it. One difference, that I like (so does Kyle) is that Adderall XR is a capsule, so you can open it up and sprinkle it on a spoonfull of applesauce. Concerta is a pill and must be swallowed. Our pediatrician said that in his experience, Adderall worked better in 3 out of 4 cases. Hope this helps.
