My 13 year old son has ADHD, diagnosed since he was 5. I also have 3 other children. I don’t believe any of them have ADHD, thank GOD! But one is still too little to tell.(he’s 2 and we are praying that he won’t have it) Anyway, my 13 year old has not been on meds for several years because the side effects were too much. (losing weight, not sleeping well, horrible moods coming off the meds) It has been rough going as you can imagine. My son has problems at school and at home, the normal ADHD problems that most familes are experiencing. Add puberty to that mix and it can get real ugly.
I have been reading everything I can about Strattera. I have shared this information with my son. He will be going to the doctor in a couple of weeks and I would like to try this medication with him. I am of course concerned because it is a new medication. I ask that everyone who is trying it please keep this bulletin board updated. I will post any and all experiences we have with the medication as well. I have been waiting for a medication such as Strattera for many years. I sincerely hope it is the med that we have been hoping for. Thanks for the ear! Michelle
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My son is 14 and he too tried Strattera and it made him tired and not hungry. I have heard that the tiredness might go away but he hates not having an appetite. The side effects from the others were too much for him too.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Sleepiness seems common the first couple days from the posts I’ve read. My son slept more in the first 2 days, but it went away after that—he is on Day 10. My son’s appettite improved the first day and he is still eating more than he did. His abiltity to focus has been increasing day by day— now about 75% of what he had on Adderall. It’s still too soon to say whether this will work the way we hope it will, but I’m willing to give this a fair trial based on what I’ve seen so far.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Hi,
I too, read the trials and news and waited with baited breath for the release of this med. It was everything we hoped it would be.
I belong to a msg board strictly for parents of ADDer’s and this is a very hot topic on our postings. We have done a decent job of finding and sharing our own information about this new med.
The newest advice is, that if you did not get to 4 weeks on the target dose, you haven’t really even tried this med, so don’t give up so quickly.
Second, our doctors aren’t having our kids do a med washout period, as they did in the trials of this new med. Therefore withdrawal from previous meds will negatively effect the results of Strat for up to 2 weeks. It will also worsen side effects or cause parents to mistake withdrawal for side effects of Strat.
Third, This medicine will work on Hyperactivity, impulsiveness and ability to focus. It will not help behavioral problems, ODD or OCD. If you are expecting it to solve all your problems, you’ll be disappointed! It seems the more severe the ADD the less effective, as is the case with many meds. Also, if comorbid conditions are present, their is a higher fail rate.
Don’t believe the label, full stomach is a must!
Our personal experience; it works fabulously. There IS a lethargic side effect, we contered that with earlier bed time and a naps as needed. Some spitting up once in a blue moon. Many people associate throwing up with being very ill, this is not like that. He sort of burps up fluid, but not food. And he feels fine in 10 to 15 mins. This has only happened 2x in 50 some odd days. While some parents are finding it disturbing, I consider it a fine trade when I think of the side effects of other meds; not eating, not sleeping, not growing. I can’t think of three more important things my kids need to do! Thats the bad. I’ll take a nap and a heave once every few weeks over that in a heartbeat! It has indeed almost completely eradicated my 7yos motor tics. We did not expect this, but WHAT A PERK! I’ve have realized that the msg boards are not a good place to look for positive experiences with the Strat. The parents having bad experiences, being frustrated and disappointed, are the ones speaking up the most often and the loudest. So this is not a accurate veiw of the med. Our Doctors are seeing fantastic success ratios compared to msg boards.
Good Luck, and get to that 4th week before drawing any conclusions!Michelle wrote:

Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
There is a mixed group on added support concerning straterra, I think the majority are finding success though. It does apparently take a while to see the affects, not unlike other non stimulant medicines used for adhd. wellbutrin comes to mind.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
To be honest, I haven’t seen any difference in my 11 yo since starting straterra 2/ 1/2 weeks ago. Maybe it is too soon. I sure hope so. He hasn’t been sleepy and was nauseated a couple of days but that is it!! He is 90 lbs and on 40 mg. I don’t know if that is the right dose for his wt. or not. Anyone know? Sure hope we see some results in the near future. Jan
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
The formula for dosing is 1.2 mgs for every 2.2 lbs. Divide your sons weight by 2.2 then multiply that # by 1.2. That should be your dose. It does work very differently than the other meds so I wasn’t sure it was working either. The proof was in the classroom.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I’ve written before about straterra. My younger son (age 11) has been in a clinical drug trial for the med since May ‘02. He’s had very positive results. Since his dosage was built up gradually, we really didn’t see results for 3-4 wks. Eventually, the med did wonders for him. He started participating in groups at school, became more confident, took on the responsibility of homework w/o me pushing him. He started 6th gr. this school yr., and has been on the honor roll for both semesters. (this is a change for the better-seeing his self-esteem go up has been great.)
Just started my older son (age 16) on Strattera 2/14 (today was the first day w/full dosage: 80 mg. He was sick w/a fever (most likely not related to the med.)for a couple days, and is feeling better. With Presidents Day, MON, and snowstorm here in the DC area, it’s given him a couple days to get used to the med., although he says he doesn’t feel any different. Still waiting for him to take on any homework that he’s ignored…
will keep you informed.
thanks,
Marcie
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My 17 year old son just started Strattera a week ago. He took a 40 mg pill/day for the first 4 days and then 2 40mg pills in the morning. He, too, did not like the first 5days because he was so sleepy and sluggish. However, this is going away and he is beginning to like it. He says his attention level is as good as Concerta, but he has a normal appetite and does appear, in general, calmer to me. I think you may want to give it a longer try.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My 6 y/o son has been on strattera for 4 days. He is only on 18mg, will increase to 25mg today. He has never been on any other med to compair it to. He has been tired. No bed time fights (smile). He has has no stomach discomfort. His appetite has not decreased.
I have seen minimal improvement. I told the doctor I guess I expected more of a change- he said my son is not on a full dose yet. One change I do see is at dinner time… he actually sits and eats- I don’t have to keep pulling him back from his distractions… i.e. from playing with the phone cord, watching the animals in the back yard, standing up, sitting on one knee, sitting on two knees, sitting on the floor, standing up– he can actually sit in his chair and focus on the plate of food infront of him and actually eat in a timely fashion.
Though it’s early on, my initial response is a positive one.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My 15 yr old son has been on stimulants since he is six. Since he entered puberty, his ADD has really been a problem. He’s immature and has not made a very good adjustment to high school. He was on 10mg of dexedrine and 72mg of Concerta in the morning and Paxil and Zyprexa at night. We were at our wits end with him.
About 3 weeks ago he started taking Straterra. He’s not on a full dose yet as he’s being weaned off the other drugs. We have seen some really nice changes in him. He’s much less irratble. He says he’s happier. We think he’s happier. He’s much more co-operative and he’s started doing homework. He was on the edge of being asked to leave the school he’s in. He also wants to participate in track. So he has great incentives to change since he really wants to stay at his present school. We think his new motivation coupled with the new meds are responsible for the change. In fact, I’m thinking the difference is the meds.
In the past, no matter how badly he wanted something he couldn’t keep up the effort. It also seems like overnight he’s becoming aware of consequences. We can’t wait to see what the full dosage does. But we’re still cautious. We’ve been through a number of med changes in the last 10 years and each change was going to be “the answer.” All I know is that we’ve had 3 weeks without major battles over nothing. In fact, we’ve hardly had battles. I hope our experience is helpful.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
IVE BEEN BATTLEING MEDS. FOR 7 YEARS , AND THANK GOD IVE DECIDED TO REASEARCH STRATTERA AND I WILL SEE HOW IT CAN HELP MY CHILD IN SO MANY WAYS????
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My son is 5 and he is on concerta. At his last doctor’s appt. he mentioned strattera. My son has really bad mood swings when his medicine is wearing off. The doctor said that the strattera eliminates the moodiness. If that is true I would like to try it. It is very difficult to deal with my son always in such a bad mood in the evenings. Everything we ask him to do is a fight. Does this med work on moodiness? Someone please reply.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Hi Caren,
I have 4 sons with either ADD or ADHD ranging in age from 27 yrs old to 7 yrs old. I have been through years of medications, psychologists, ect as you can imagine. We have used Ritalin with my older sons as that was all that was available at the time they were diagnosed. With my youngest son, we have used Concerta, Adderrall and now Strattera. He did well on Concerta and Adderral for a while but then the effects seem to just wear off. Currently he is on about day 8 of the Strat and I see some positve things even though I realize now from your message that it takes about 4 weeks to know for sure what the results will be. He had probably a couple of days of drowsiness at the beginning. None of my kids have ever had problems with weight loss or appetite loss and if anything when my youngest son began to outgrow his dosages he would eat us out of house and home. My husband and I are very hopeful for this new medication. I also wasn’t really aware that the previous meds could interfere somewhat when the Strat was first started so I’m glad you mentioned that. I guess I didn’t think about it because it seemed that Concerta and Adderrall seemed to take effect so quickly and then just reach a period in the evening when it seemed to be completely gone that I assumed it did not really remain in his body that long. I am a nurse as well as a mother and this information has been very helpful. I discovered an online suppoet group the other day for parents of ADD/ADHD. What is the name/ website of the one you said you are in? I would very much like to check it out. Thank a lot for the encouraging information and good luck with your child.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
According to the information I got from the website where the FDA approved the medication, the maximum dose per day is 2mg/kg/day but that most kids had good results with 1.6mg/kg/day. I am a nurse and I can tell you that this translates into the following. 90 pounds=41kilograms(kg.). If he received the maximum dose based on this formula he would get 82mg/day. At the average that was supposedly effective with most kids based on the 90 pound weight he would receive 65mg per day. I hope this is helpful. Please also see my earlier message.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I haven’t researched everything about Strattera yet but do know that our local children’s hospital did extensive clinical trials with it and our psychiatrist (who is also at the Children’s Hosp) is very knowledgeable about it. We are thinking of trying it since our son, age 10, did not tolerate the stimulants well at all. One tidbit of information I received from our family practitioner, who has a daughter with ADHD, is that Strattera may have a therapuetic effect for OCD and OCD spectrum disorders. There are clinical trials going on right now regarding this finding. Our son has ADHD and OCD (although there are no compulsions seen). He has disturbing thoughts and suffers from Trichotillomania (hair pulling) which was, in fact, made much worse with the stimulant meds. He was able to focus so well that he pulled almost all of the hair on his head out. Very strange, indeed. Thanks, TBG
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
RE: Moodiness
I do not know how this drug works re: moodiness… I do know that your child will not experience the highs and lows of a stimulant (i.e adderal, concerta, ect.). The only way to explain it is while on Strattera you are simply “on it”, you will not experience the highs and lows as you would with the other drugs. Please note this is all hear say….. comming from my sons pediatrician (of 6 yrs) from experience he’s learned from other children and adults on Strattera.
I hope this helps.

Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I’m confused, we just recently put our son on Strattera. This is his first medication ever. I am finding, much like some other parents, that he has become very sleepy. We are into our 5th day and just went from the initial 40mg dose for 4 days to 60mg. What bothers me is I don’t see that sleepiness is ever listed as a side effect in any of the information I read but it seems to be a common thread in the listings here. Should I be concerned with this side effect or do we stick with it?
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I am SOOOOOOOOO glad that I decided to get on the internet and happen to find this site! Our son, age 11, has ADD and is now on Straterra, day 11. The first 4 days on 18 mg and now 25 mg. He was previously on 15 mg of Adderall XR and having great results except for not having an appetite and losing weight. So far, Straterra, is making him tired and not feel so well. His doctor has told us to give it more time. After reading your entry, I am convinced to give it more time. Thanks!

Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
How have things been the past week. Is he still showing improvement. Am considering taking my 16yr old off concerta cause of bad reactions and starting this.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
re: sleepiness
Cut & pasted from Lilly’s web page: http://www.strattera.com
Side Effects — Children and Adolescents
Most children who experienced side effects were not bothered enough to stop taking Strattera. The most common side effects in medical studies were upset stomach, decreased appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, TIREDNESS, and mood swings.
In short-term clinical trials with children and adolescents, a modest decrease in appetite was the most common side effect. Some children may experience a loss of weight when starting treatment with Strattera. As with all ADHD medications, growth should be monitored during treatment.
In rare cases, Strattera can cause allergic reactions, such as swelling or hives, which can be serious. Stop taking Strattera and call your doctor or healthcare professional if you develop any of these symptoms.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Contact your doctor or healthcare professional if you develop any unusual symptoms.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My son used to take stimulant medication and did have terrible mood swings. After we took him off meds the mood swings stopped. I attribute it to the stimulant med. So Straterra may not help mood swings directly but changing to Straterra from stimulant med may. My son is almost 16 now and after 3 years of being med free asked me to take him to the Doctor to inquire about ADD med . He started Straterra 5 days ago and thinks it is helping already. No appetite problems no mood swings . He did say he thinks he gets chills from it and his pupils are dilated. I’m calling the Doctor about that tommorrow.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I have noticed that almost all of the comments are made by mother’s of sons. I have a 10 year old daughter, we just started the medication two days ago. Coming off of concerta that didn’t help and prior to that Adderal that work wonderfully but she dropped 18lbs in two months. She now weights 77 lbs. She feels that is working she too is taking a nap in the afternoon after school but she is waking up friendly. I too will keep checking the site as treatting ADD is a battle finding the right drug and insurance coverage. Our insurance does not recogize this drug and the out of pocket is outrageous, but we will somehow manage if it works.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
My daughter is 5 years old and has been on Straterra approx. 6 weeks. At first her teacher could not tell much of a difference, stating only that she stayed in her seat more and wasn’t as scrimy. It DID NOT help her focus at all. I’ve had her on 5 mg. of Adderall for about a week before I tried Sraterra and she got suspended from school for 3 days for hitting her P.E. teacher on the leg! I didn’t know they could suspend you in Kindergarten! I went back to her doctor and told her she was going to give her a stronger dosage and she put her on Straterra.
My daughter has been balking about swallowing the pill so I decided to give her a break from taking it over the weekend. BIG MISTAKE! Unlike the Adderall, Straterra is a time release drug and needs to stay in her system to be effective. The following Monday she came home with another bad conduct. I made sure she got back on track with it again and by Tuesday her conduct had approved. Her teacher says she can already tell a drastic difference in her behavior now.
My biggest problem now is this: If this medicine is taken primarily by children for ADHD, why don’t they make it in a liquid form, or a patch that can be absorbed into the skin like a big bandaid? I was told that maybe a pharmacist that is licensed as a chemist may be able to remake it into a liquid. I am checking into this option now. I will keep you posted.
I finally went to my own doctor after dealing with all my daughters problems from school and told them: “the heck with her, I need something for me before I have a nervous breakdown!”. So Mommy takes her Zoloft every morning, and daughter takes her Straterra, and everything is going fine!
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
I appreciate your sense of humor! We started our 5 yo son on Strattera today. We do not have any previous experiences with medication for treating ADD as he was diagnosed yesterday. This is a first for us and I thank you all for your information. It is helpful to know that I should not expect any significant results for 3-4 weeks and the possible side effects. I am encouraged and excited that there is a possiblity for positive results for my son.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Welcome to the club. I take celexa and welbutrin My friend, whose daughter(who is 15) was diagnosed with ADD about a year ago, has just started taking effexor. I have another friend, whose daughter is anorexic, is on Zoloft. I just think our meds act as shock absorbers. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot more parents of ADD kids are also on meds.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Is Strattera a controlled substance? My heart does take a deeper beat when i think my daughter has to take a drug everyday for the rest of her life. When we took Adderal we skipped the weekends. I love her perky attitude and i miss her activitiy level that she had prior to all these meds. however i don’t miss the letters from the teachers addressing her behavior the studying for hours simply to get a “D” and her misdirected belief that she was “Stupid”, talk about taking the good with the bad. My daughter did not eat a thing on Adderal the weight just kept coming off until we had to stop. Now she takes 5mg Adderal ER and 40mg of Strattera just started this week anxiously awaiting to hear from her teacher with her weekly report (to assist us in evaluating her meds) and the weight check which we have weekly, until she gains at least 5 lbs.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Bobbie, Strattera is NOT a controlled substance. For more information, check out the following website at “Strattera.com”. It explains a lot, including side effects. Believe me, I did a lot of research on this before I put my daughter on it.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Wendy, How old is your daughter. My daughter is 10 and she is such a willing participant she loved the way the adderal help her. Her school suggested in 2nd grade that i have her tested and i was in denial and they retained her. in third grade it just didn’t get easier then a new friend of mine suggested i have her reviewed for ADD as she presented the same personality as her daughter. once she was placed on Adderal it was like we had a new daughter joining after school sports, even entering a talent show. her grades went from f & d’s to B’s and C’s then she dropped 20 some pounds so quickly we had to take her off it. Concerta was useless to us the emotions ran rampid. The mixture of Adderal and Strattera seemed to be doing the trick. Have you any research results as to combination drug treatments?
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
CAN YOU JUST COLD TURKEY THEM OFF CONCERTA ON TO STRATTERA OR DO YOU NEED TO GIVE THEM A GRACE PERIOD. ALSO WHAT MILAGRAM DO YOU NEED TO BEGIN WITH.. THANKS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HER SLEEPING.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Laura…we were given a sample. We did start the next day from concerta directly to Strattera we started 4 days with 25 mg, and then to 40mg it was okay for us. My daughter did take an afternoon nap when she got home from school she could not keep her eyes open. We are still there.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
lily…how is your son doing you are a few days ahead of us. We too had the extreme weight loss on adderal and are on our 4th day of strattera so far so good for us.
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
RE: weight loss
My son has been on Strattera since 2/18/03 and has been eating non-stop. His appetite has increased. One of my concerns with this med was that he’d loss weight-not so! SMILE
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
our son is on his 11th day of stratterra. he was on dexadrine for 6yrs and obviously heavily dependent. his withdraw has been somewhat wild but the stratterra has enabled him to eat and actually feel hunger for the first time in years. and for sleep, this is a miracle. we notice on stratterra that he doesnt settle into his day as quickly as with a stimulant and he seems much more hyper at night time, but does go to bed easier and stays sleeping. weird ha? p.s our son has gained 10 pds in 3 wks!! 10yrs old and now 60 lbs!!
does anyone know if this drug builds up in the system and stays at a level, i cant find any info on how this meds works exactly. is it an antidepressent?
Re: ADHD & Strattera- Here's to hope
Well we were on Strattera for only one week i thought all was looking well my daughter 10 also said she thought maybe but not sure not 100% and then came the call from her teacher at the end of the first week…Not good she got the worst test grades she received all year two 50’s and a 63 all of which we studied for in great lengths. She was iratable all week and very argumentative with her peers. she took frequent bathroom breaks etc. We go for weekly weight checks every friday and when this call was discussed with the Dr. along with my daughters attitude that she was “not going to take any more pills everyday that don’t help her unless it was the Adderal” that work beautifully but we had weight loss. oh well here we go again rollercoaster ride…….my thoughts were to give the Strattera more time…My daughter who is the key player here and unbelievably aware as to the medicine and success and or failure of them is who my doctor decided to side with. Her will to succeed is heartbreaking. She has tasted that success with the adderal and she wants it back.
i need some input on this !!
Has anyone experienced bouts of just falling asleep anytime, anywhere. im wondering if this will be a normal occurence. our son never slept good on stimulant meds, so this is different for sure. can you share any experience. im wondering if this isnt just still withdraw symptoms from the stimulant meds he has recently been taken off of.
Re: i need some input on this !!
MY DAUGHTER WAS ON CONSERTA AND I SWITCHED HER TO 25 MLGS. STRATTERA AND SHE SLEPT FOR 17 AND A HALF HOURS STRAIGHT. SO I CHANGED HER TO 18 MLG. MUCH BETTER.
Re: i need some input on this !!
My son is fifteen and today his doctor wants to start him on Strattera. From all the input I have read so far I believe he would have to be on it seven days a week. My concern is that he is into MX racing on the weekend, does anyone know if this will affect his responding to doing the right things while racing a 125 or a 250 dirt bike. Does anyone have a child that is on Strattera and very active in sports? Please anyone give me some imput on a high active sport and taking strattera.
My son acts okay on the race track but has trouble in high school with homework and paying attention in class. In the past he took Metadate which did not seem to be helping him in school and also giving him headaches.
Any information will really help. Thank.
I need some input on this !!
I have a 9 year old son who the school says he is having a hard time focusing, that he fidgits a lot, he blurts out, he is disorganized. He is getting all A’s and scored a 99% on his Iowa Basic testing. They say that I should have him tested that he shows signs of ADHD. I have been reading the Ritalin fact book and am very concerned about putting him on stimulent meds like Ritalin, Concerta, etc. I also feel that if he was having such a hard time focusing, that his grades would reflect that. Does anyone have any input on this?
Re: I need some input on this !!
If you have read some of my notes on this board you will read that my son has been on stimulant meds for six years, had i known the long term withdraw that we this week are going thru with him as well as the lifetime of never being able to eat or drink because of no appetite or stomache ache and lack of growing we would never have used concerta, ritalin or dexadrine all similar meds. if your son is doing so well and just figiits, heck with it, it wouldnt in hind sight.
to carol
regarding the mlg your daughter was on , my son did weight 48lbs (10yrs old)when we started strattera last week they said the 25mlg was ok for his weight but your right he is so sleepy and we havnt noticed any help with this med yet for behavior and such, how much does your daughter weigh?
Re: to carol
I am so amazed at the weights all of you are posting 10 yrs old and 45 or 60 lbs that is just not right how tall are your children. Low weight and not gaining the proper weight is dangerous especially for girls and their reproductive organs. We must evalutate do we want good grades and children sitting idol and in 20 years they can’t have children. I too have these same concerns will i be saying to my daughter when she is 30 that “you can’t have children but you got B’s in 4th grade” Girls and low growth weights = problems. Any others out there with this concern….?????
Re: to carol
If the low weight is hereditary then that should not be a concern, clearly we all want healthy children but to what expense are willing to pay. Not everyone has to have a college education to be successful in life and if your child is classified with a learning disability there should special promotions and allowance in her education All I am saying is being a mother has been the most gratifying experience in my life and if i strip the possiblities from daughter so that she can get a “good grade” then i am surely chosing her path in life. Putting education, which don’t get me wrong is very important, in front of future family. Deep I know but clearly a reality. I have been to enough nutrionists who have pounded that fact into me. It is amazing how many young girls by way of anerxia be it medically induced or self induced have destroyed their reproductive organs. I myself have suffered from it resulting in Kidney failure. Just watch your girls closely to assure that they are following normal growth. And Good luck to all who must carry this heavy cross.
low weight
everyone,
i just joined this board to learn of experiences with strattera. we have gotten rid of stimulant meds because it was destroying ours sons health. he is the one who is , or was 3wks ago ,10yrs old and and weighing only 48lbs and 52 inches tall i believe. lets not judge our parents because of the choices we make. sometimes these side effects sneak up on us quickly and changes , like the one to straterra, are what we try. and lets face it, many of us dont medicate for grades, thats absurd. children suffer from other symptoms than poor grades. like our son, severe odd, hyperactivity, anxiety. keeping them in the classrom is a daily challenge with behavior. i would be happy with a c !!! so all of us out here are not medicating for grades , we are hoping to find something to give our children their lives back and for them to have friends and some normalcy in their day. * and for those who want to know, strattera in 3wks has helped our son gain nearly ten pounds!
Re: I need some input on this !!
to joann
i wouldnt use stimulant meds. our son got very dependent on them. if he is doing as well as you say, leave well enough alone. there are many other methods. how is his behavior, is he odd or hyper?
Re: low weight
I by no means meant to imply that we are simply medicating for grades, as “absurb” as you may think that is… but i would challange you as to the importance the drugs play on the success of the childrens grades (school in general). Case is point how many parents do not medicate on weekends, family vacations, or summer break? Ispeak with many parents who’s children are on medications and they chose not to give their children the medication unless they are going to school. I am simply trying to attempt to warn, most specifically the parents of girls, the dangers of improper or inadequate weight growth. I am well aware as to how quickly they (symptoms, or side affects) sneak up on you my daughter lost 23lbs in 65 days (heartbreaking) We have to feed off of each others experiences be them positive or negative. As we have little else. And congratulations on the weight gain, keep up the good work. I too am happy with not only a C but D’s will surfice at times. It deserves repeating many schools systems have special arrangements for children that are classified with a learning Disabitly these arrangements should benefit each child in unique way as to whether additional time is needed on testing, seating, homework, multiple tasking, seak out all that you can to assist your children along with the meds. Have a wonderful day to all as we are blessed with another sun.
Re: i need some input on this !!
My 9 year old son is a competitive figure skater and is on Strattera. He is newly diagnosed and this is his first time being one meds. So far so good (one week on Strattera). The doctor says it will make him less likely to get hirt due to the additional attention he will pay (focus) and the fact that he should not be so impulsive doing things that are likely to cause injury.
Re: I need some input on this !!
I think he is a typical nine year old boy with a lot of energy….Sometimes he talks back and sometimes he argues the fact ( I always tell him that someday he will be a lawyer). He does a lot of talking and wants to be in the middle of EVERY conversation. He really wants to know what is going on. Especially when you are on the phone. But, he isn’t annoying or bothersome. He just wants to know and if you tell him to stop, he usually does. He just has a hard time sitting still. He has always been a very active boy. I was divorced when he was one and I think that has a lot to do with it. He has been constantly on the move. At first, he was at my house for 2 days and then at his dads for 2 days. and the switching every other weekend. That went on until he was 4 or 5. Then I convinced his Dad that I felt it was better for him to be in one home. I felt he didn’t know whether he was coming or going. I said especially when school starts. So now he is with me all week and with his Dad every Wednesday night and every other weekend. The problem still is that his Dad gives no discipline or consequences. He hardly ever even checks his book bag from school. My husband now is a school teacher, so he sees a lot of problems with kids as they get older and doesn’t want that to happen to Dalton. I am taking Dalton to an appt. on Thursday March 13 to see about getting him tested for ADHD. What kind of tests did they run on your son?
My daughter did not respond well to this medication and I stopped giving it to her after two days. She was very sedated and slow moving and thinking. She could not do her work. Her neurologist said most of her patients had good results, though.
