We are taking our high school age son off Strattera…it has made him depressed. I talked with the Pediatrician today and he told me that Strattera has been great for kids with behaviors and hyperactivity but our son is more inattentive, distractable and daydreamy he was never hyper… But with the Strattera this last month, it started out good probably because he was still coming off the Dexadrine but now that Strattera has built up in his system he has become more lethargic, inattentive, sleepy, depressed and procrastinates until the cows come home. Trying to motivate him to do his homework came to a head this week as I found…He hasn’t been doing or turning in his homework

He told me tonight…I am sick of taking drugs… I don’t want to have to take drugs to get good grades anymore..So what if I am a B student. I know what I have to do to focus and I think now I am just being lazy. When he was on Dexadrine from 9th thru 11th grade he made honor roll… he would still procrastinate but he was able to do his homework as he says…like nobody’s business. So I am respecting his decision to not take the Strattera.

His older brother is taking Strattera and doing well in college. The older brother is ADHD with impulsivity, distractibility…Totally different than the younger boy who didn’t respond well to Strattera, who is ADD-Inattentive with a low keyed personality..

THANKS for the reply! My son who is 7 years old is also inattenative, distractable, CAPD. So, that info helps. I don’t need to make a decision on what to do just yet. We are just keeping an eye on the weight for right now. The adderall seems to work for him too!!! He’s just a quiet kid that
drifts alot…………………. THANKS!

But Concerta isn’t necessary the solution either. It has helped my son tremendously, but he has ZERO appetite and has lost weight.

My 16-year old daughter with ADHD experiences decreased appetite on Dexedrine. Since we added Wellbutrin for depression, it’s extremely difficult for her to eat anything at all. We’re considering changing from Dexedrine to either Concerta or Straterra in hopes that one of them will have less of an appetite supressing effect. Any experience to help guide us will be appreciated.

The Dr. wanted to swtich our son from Strattera to Concerta, which is what his sister takes but my son decided to go off all meds…So far we are keeping our fingers crossed. My son said he had to force himself to eat even when he wasn’t hungry when he was on Dexedrine as he knew he had to eat even if he wasn’t hungry..
