Hi- I wanted to hear from other mothers with girls w/ADHD. Because girls seem to have the inattention v. the hyperactivity asssociate with adhd, I wanted to hear how Strattera is working for you. My 10 yr old daughter was just recently diagnosed and we are going into day 3 with Strattera. We start with 4 days of 25 mgs and then we will go to the 40 mg. I have not seen any of the side effects listed in some of the other topics. I have seen an immediate difference with her voice level, attention to details, and listening. This is our first medication. I too was very nervous and have been investigating all of the pros and cons of this med. Would love to hear from other mothers in the same situation.
Re: Girls/ADHD/Strattera
Sharon - I thought the one dose of Strat was to last all day. Do you know specifically about how long it lasts? I was unclear on that.
Re: Girls/ADHD/Strattera
…and please keep posting the updates. We are most likely going to try Strattera this summer for my 9yo ADHD dd. The distractability and impulsivity are her biggest issues - her perpetual motion, while definitely there, is not as much of an issue or “obvious” as hyperactive boys. So, I’m very interested in your experiences.

Re: Girls/ADHD/Strattera
Just curious as to why you’re waiting til summer if she has these issues now?

Re: Girls/ADHD/Strattera
She has those issues unmedicated. She’s on Concerta now. She also has learning differences (a remediated moderate dyslexic).
She was blasted with so much early intervention over the past three years. She is doing so well that this school year, 4th grade, she is on ‘transition’ to be declassified out of special ed. For the first time, she’s going it all alone - no resource room, supportive services (math/reading) or private tutoring. The help has been tapered off - so it’s not that sudden of a change, but 4th grade is a challenging school year plus there’s all those dreck state tests for her to be “going it alone”.
She’s handling a lot and holding her own very well. We are all excited and pleased (I’m righteously proud of her). Of the four meds we’ve tried, Concerta is the only one that works. But she’s also had 3 dosage adjustments on Concerta over 2 1/2 years. Her doctor and I are hoping Strattera will be a viable alternative.
IMO she can’t afford a month for a Strattera trial period during this school year particularly if the Concerta still works for her. She knows she is holding her own this year - and that is tremendous for her regardless of school performance. That’s why the doctor suggested summer. I can’t take away something we know works for her at this point. There’s too much on her plate - she’s working so damn hard and succeeding - I kinda feel like it would be cruel to play with risks when we could more easily try it without school pressures in summer.
Maybe more than you asked for, but that’s the whole picture.
Re: Girls/ADHD/Strattera
sounds like you’re right on the ball and totally doing the 100% best thing for her! I say stay w/ your program for now and do like Dr says and try the Strat in the summer….good plan! :) You sound like a really great Mom :)
