This is a link to the website. If it doesn’t come up just type in a search engine assistive listening devices or auditory trainers and you can read more about them.

I will try to get an old article I have about using them with ADD students. I had read about this study and told my counselor at the Students with Disabilities office about it she was all excited to see if other ADD students would use a trainer like I did. It made my life easier because I have a hearing impairment beside the ADD but other students who were just ADD might be too embarrased to use a trainer.

There is some hope for you parents…I was one of those ADHD kids who caused problems in 1st grade. Testing was done and they discovered I had a hearing loss so I was put into an SDC in 2nd grade with an SLP/SDC teacher to learn how to read lips. An assistive listening device was available hen I got sick and needed to hear better as I didn’t have a hearing aid. By third grade I was mainstreamed and then placed in the Gifted and Talented Program.

I kind of understand what some of these kids go through as I have lived with ADD/CAPD/HI my whole life. :-)

Hi Patti,

I was talking to my son about computers the other day and he mentioned seeing a device that the teacher would talk into and would come up as print on the computer. I think it was attached to the computer. He said it was for MAC but after looking for info last night I have come up empty. Do you think maybe he was talking about something like Dragon naturally speaking or something like that? I had the impression it was something that could pick up the teacher’s voice as he/she taught the lesson.

Well I did also see a digital voice recorder that can be plugged into the computer but I don’t believe it went to text. Just wondering if you had an idea about what he was talking about.

I still wish the teachers had those electronic white boards I saw at a tech convention. A true modern miracle! The teacher could write notes on the board as part of the lecture and then print out copies to all the students from the computer.

Thanks.
Amy

Look up Augmentative Communication or the Communication Aid Manufacturers Association and you will come up with manufacturers of devices,

Dragon speak, Assistive Technologies, inclusive TLC, turning point inc, zygo, www.tash.inc, Prentke Romich company, Mayer Johnson, www.madentec.com, www.words-plus.com, Adaptivation, inc, ablenet, dynavox, www.enkidu.net, .

For example, Steven Hawking doesn’t speak but he uses his eyes to communicate with Wordsplus, and a machine speaks for him. I am not familiar with the particular device that you are speaking of but I bet if you surf the web looking at the manufacturers I mentioned you will find what you are looking for.
