I want to thank everyone who responded to my request for Lindamood Bell information. I am very grateful to any help offerd. We are truly desperate to help our child who is quickly approaching adulthood. Our son reads at the 6th-7th grade level now, but dips way down in spelling, and still has an incredible time reading bits of information where not enough context clues are available. For example, “Beagle on board” becomes “Bagel on board.” He cannot read the names of ice-cream flavors in an ice-cream store and cannot read enough to function w/out books on tape. Classroom work is a problem as a result. He also spells so poorly that he can take almost no notes from a blackboard. He attended a private school for dyslexics, did well, but is incredibly dyslexic (illiterate at 12yrs. old). Now that he is out and in the real world, he is feeling very incompetent (now 16yrs. old). IQ is above average and motivation still high, though he would like to be “normal.” Keep the advice coming!
Re: thanks! Any other suggestions?
Look into the Orton-Gillingham Program! So far has done wonders for my child and is suppose to be really geared towards dyslexic children! Good luck.
Hi K,
I did phonographix with my son and he did develop 3rd grade level reading skills in second grade. He still has excellent sound symbol connection but he did sort of plateau at this level. I realized I needed to go back and review some of the material and do some of the tests with him to see where the breakdown was. I found he was having trouble with some of the segmenting; when I asked him what frog would be if we took away the f sound he said og.
This was interesting because when we originally finished this program he could do this. I have been going over this with him again and he seems to be picking it up. The book reading reflex has a series of tests that help you decide where the breakdown is.
I also have added lindamood bell seeing stars. This is really not that hard to add to what we currently do with phonographix. My son has difficulty with symbol imagery. He can not make mental pictures of the symbols in his head. I try to have him review the spelling of words by picturing each of the sounds and then I ask him what the second or third sound is that he sees. I then will show him the word so that he compare what he saw in his head to what it is supposed to look like.
I bought the seeing stars material from lindamood bell but the only part that I use is the concept of visualizing the sounds in the word. I have just combined this concept with phonographix. I am hoping this will help him with spelling when he writes and help him read with less effort.
I have also asked him to visualize some of the math concepts. For example; when he looks at the number chart and counts by 4 he should picture that numbers chart in his head when he doesn’t have it in front of him. I did this because I realized this is how I do math and I have always been pretty good.
It is too early to tell how this plan is going to work.
Good Luck
