Hi All,
A person who had some amount of credibility gave me a tip that Magnesium, taken as a dietary supplement, had been shown to have a significant, positive effect on kids with ADD and ADD/HD. I’m always skeptical of these “myracle cure” types, and pill poppers, but I felt that this was worth a look anyway.
Do any of you have any real experience with Magnesium supplements? Is there any decent data out there on this? I found one article that cited some limited data from Poland, but I was wondering what those of you “in the trenches” think.
Thanks,
Dan
Re: Magnesium Supplements as Treatements for ADD
another quote from someone who uses mag.
“http://www.kirkmanlaboratory.com has Magnesium Sulfate
Cream (topical epson salt preparation)- I put this on
when I am too tired to give them a 20 minute bath in
epson salt. Also, I rub it on during the day if they
get antsiety :) - works great, but is $17 (I think)
but worth it.”

Re: Magnesium Supplements as Treatements for ADD
Sharon and Dan
Thanks for this I will try it too and see if it helps. Irritability is definitely a factor with my son, up tight, lots of things stress him out. I don’t know what they have in here in Australia but I will ask tomorrow at the chemist and the epsom salts in the bath sounds like fun for the kids too, are there any possible skin reactions? I think I’ll start with a small dose, and maybe one for me, phew!
I’m interested to here any other imput too.
Thanks very much
Janette

Re: Magnesium Supplements as Treatements for ADD
Hi Sharon,
Thanks for this information the website didn’t come up unfortunately, is it an old link?
We can get Epsom salts here and yes milk of magnesia for upset tummies. And as well as all that it’s good for plants with yellowing leaves, what a versatile mineral!
Thanks again, Janette
PS Have you been on to this website for long you sound as though you have. It’s a great one I’m in Australia and have just discovered it, so visual and accessable and the information is excellent!
Re: Magnesium Supplements as Treatements for ADD
Dear Sharon, Janette, et al,
I appeciate your comments. On Monday morning we started a little informal test. We gave our son the standard dose of a Calcium-Magnesium supplement, just to see if it would have any effect. We had been sporadically giving him the supplement, since he’s 6-4 and growing fast.
The preliminary results were very encouraging, but I don’t want to proclaim any kind of victory. He made a special point of mentioning to me in the evening that he felt dramatically more attentive in school, even though he hadn’t had enough sleep the night before. He mentioned several classes in which he was able to pay much closer attention to what was going on.
Prior to the “experiment” I really hadn’t given him much information about my expectations, so I don’t think he’s making this up.
My son has a fairly severe case of Aspergers Syndrome, and we have spent many $10’s of thousands of dollars on therapies for him. The therapies have been very successful in many ways, and he could no longer be diagnosed with AS, but the lingering issues of attention and executive control have had us stumped.
I will be looking into the literature to see if I can get any more hard facts.
Sharon: Do you have any references that might be useful. You can e-mail us at [email protected] if you like. I will share anything I find out.
Thanks again,
Dan
Re: Magnesium Supplements as Treatements for ADD
Hi again,
We all my children and I took magnesium today and they had an Epsom Salts bath last night. My ds seems a lot less edgy and up tight irritable easily provoked today also generally happier and more able to comply with less grouchiness but we are off colouring too so it may be both things I will let you know if it stays this way. I too am feeling less irritable though still tired.
Hope it works well for you too, I am considering using other therapies and that would mean heading down the $ trail (whew!) but I’m trying some stuff at home first, we do homeschooling so we can learn in our own style and I can take the pressure off of him when appropriate also he learns differently the school program style I really believe that he’s very intuitive.
Thanks again
Love Janette
