down syndrome

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a down syndrome first grader in my regular ed class. Do you know of any reading program that is appropriate for this child. We have Rigby and am currently using the PM storybooks. Thank you!

The term “Down’s Syndrome” is not all inclusive: some are mild, some moderate, others more severely mentally handicapped. Children with learning disabilities are different; however, with either label, one cannot prescribe best educational practices based on only the label.

Maybe you should check into another board that deals more with EMH kids.

I have been very successful with Phono-Graphix for the mentally challenged. It doesn’t have any rules and there is no need for abstract reasoning. It is a straight forward program and if you would like some more information, contact me personally.
