strattera question

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son, who is 8 years old has been on strattera for about 21/2 months. It has helped tremendously with his attention until this last week and a half. He is again having trouble focusing at school and is getting in trouble again. I’m wondering if he just has spring fever or this medicine is no longer working. Any imput would be helpful.

I find that having a routine at school is very important to my son. It’s sometimes difficult for teachers to maintain a routine so close to the end of the school year. My son (also on Straterra) is more challenged as the end of year madness has already begun. Much of this would be confusing to anyone, but a kid with ADD is more easily overwhelmed. Straterra can help with focus, but focusing in what was chaos in my son’s class would be difficult for anyone. My son said it was so noisy that he tuned out the din and focused on his reading. I’d hear he wasn’t doing what he was supposed to be doing and wasn’t paying attention.

My meandering point is that sometimes the school doesn’t quite give you the whole story when they say your child is in trouble or not focusing. The fact that it was noisy and chaotic contributed greatly to my son tuning out. You might want to check it out what is going on at school to see if there are any contributing factors before changing a medication that had been successful until a week ago.
