Suspension

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a teacher and a parent. Last week I sent 3 boys to the office for throwing dirt bombs. One of the boys was my own son (who is served in Sp. Ed. for having ADHD). I did not ok for him to get swats. The Asst. Princ. suspended him for 1 whole day. The other boys received swats. Her discipline is not consistent as other kids who have had the same infraction either get the swats or pick up trash or get a “slap on the hand”. This was my son’s first infraction and he gets suspension.

We live in a small town so it’s not hard to know what’s going on at school. Out of the entire elementary school in the grades 1st-4th, my son is the only who has been suspended this school year. Is this discrimination? My problem is that her punishments are not consistent. I’d appreciate some insight and input. Thanks a million.

What are “swats” (at first I was thinking that the Principal was actually “swatting” them - like spanking them!!) But I know that can’t be true.

I would go directly to the Prin and ask why your son got suspended and the other two didn’t. Why wasn’t punishment equal for all involved no matter who started and who finished the dirt bomb throwing.

It doesn’t sound fair that’s for sure - either they all get suspended or none of them (but have another form of punishment).

I would def call a mtg on this.

Loves, good luck and keep us updated.

Swats - spanking - is still allowed in Texas and schools still do it.

I’m sorry I’ve taken so long…I’ve been doing my research on discipline and children with disabilities. A swat is a spanking. Yes, some people think that it’s illegal but not in TX!

Oh, swats are spanking. We live in TX unfortunately. I’m actually contacting some “experts” in this area at the present time. Wish me luck. ;)
