New to ADD and meds need advice

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our family is new to ADD and I just happened to find this great board. As I read through all the messages I find that the new medicine, Strattera is not working for several of you. I am curious to know more about this. Our daughter is taking Adderol XR and we are seeing good results but I am concerned about her moodiness. Her doctor wants her on Strattera because we have depression in our familyhistory and the stimulants can cause depression. We opted not to do Strattera because it takes 5-6 weeks to work. We were going to put her on it over the summer so by the start of school it would be working. I guess my concerns are, how I’ll know that this med is or not effective since she will not be doing school work over the summer. Has anyone used Strattera with their children and found it to work?

My son and I are both on Straterra. Neither one of us experienced the symptoms that you’ve probably heard talked about on various health boards. The only thing both of us noticed was being very sleepy the first couple days. You can start to see how it’s going to work in about two weeks, with it taking three to four weeks to be fully effective. We both like it because it lasts 24 hours a day. No more mid-day doses and having the scramble to get homework done before the Adderall wears off.

Everyone is different, and reacts to medications differently. Your doctor is the best one to advise you.

Peggy - My dd has been on Strattera for about 6 weeks and we are seeing good consistent results without any side effects. My dd has ADHD is 10 yrs old and on 40 mg/day. We are also new to meds. This is the first med our doctor put her on and it seems to be working. Maybe because Strattera isn’t a stimulant, we have not seen any moodiness at the end of the day. Others have stated that the moodiness is definitely more profound on Strattera. If anything, my dd’s emotional state has improved. Before it was up and down - now its seems a better balanced. How old is your daughter? Good luck with trying Strattera this summer.
