question about meds

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a 7 year old son who was just put on Concerta about 4 days ago. Our pediatrician started him on 18mg. She said that we would see a difference the very day he started the med, however we didn’t notice much change at all. So I called her and she raised the dosage to 36 mg. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it really should work the first day or was I expecting too much?

If the dose is too low, you won’t see much of a change. Usually the doctor will start a child on a low dose and increase the medication as needed until they’re at the optimum dosage.

As the child grows and changes, the amount, timing, or the medication is adjusted as needed to keep them at the optimum dosage.

My 13 1/2 year old, 102 lb. son started Concerta at 18 mg. and we immediately (within fifteen or twenty minutes) saw a difference as has been the case with every other stimulant he has tried over the years.
