Concerta

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son just added Concerta to his mix. Anyone experience “weepiness” with this med?

Any weight loss or weight gain?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks liz

Nope - heard this could occur with Adderall and dd is well, emotional enough therefore (with and per the doc) we have not tried Adderall.

But we don’t see any moodiness on Concerta. DD has unacceptable rebound on Ritalin SR and short acting Ritalin but not on Concerta.

Is the weepiness occuring at night, 10-12 hours after dose? Could it be rebound? Is this his first ADHD med?

We’ve also had to remain vigilant about dd’s weight gain on Concerta but so far Concerta is the only med that works well so we manage it.

The med responses are very individualized. What works great for some (e.g., Adderall) might not work for others and vice versa.

My daughter has been on Concerta for over a year and I haven’t noticed any weepiness. She is 14 and has some teenage “attitude”, but never seems weepy or sad. Her appetite decreases on the meds. so she makes sure to eat a decent breakfast in the a.m. before her pill and then eats a good, late dinner. The meds have caused her to lose weight if we are not careful to let her eat later at night when it wears off. She has been on methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) in one form or another for about 8 years and it hasn’t seemed to affect her height much, though (for all the negative press I’ve read about Ritalin stunting growth…we just haven’t experienced that ourselves) …she is pretty tall…just a smidge away from 5’8”. Well, I guess she could have been 6’1” or something without the meds, but I think 5’8” is plenty tall! :-)

Best of luck…

Although there are weight management concerns with dd’s Concerta that the doc is monitoring, she is fine with dd’s growth so far. Doc explained that since dd’s height has not been affected (the # of pants she has outgrown in length, not waist is unbelievable) she wouldn’t be growing taller unless her body/bones had the nutrients/calories it needed.

I thought the research shows med treatment has no long term effect on growth. Is there a new (reputable) study out saying otherwise or is it maybe bad press?

Our son has zero appetite while the medication is in effect.

He has about an hour at night when he gets moody and sullen. I think it occurs when his dose of Concerta is running out. Doesn’t happen every night though, thankfully.

Hi,
My son is 17 and just started taking 36 mg Concerta. I am new at this “medicine game” and frankly, I am not sure of what to expect. Any success stories out there?

My 8yo son was on Concerta 18 for about 8 mnths, then increased to 27 mg for about a month. During that time he only gained 2 pounds and grew 1 1/2 inches in height. He did not eat very much at any one time but seemed to snack all day. He also was unable to sleep. His bedtime is 8:30 and it normally took him until 12:00 before he would finally go to sleep.
We just changed his med to Strattera 25 and his appetite is back and in full force. He is going to sleep within 10 mins of bedtime.

Thanks for all the replies. The weepiness could be associated with some depression issues but seemed to coincide with the med!

Now that you mention, Son has been having his 9 o’clock bowl of cereal again. He had recent weight gain(cus of Zoloft?) and don’t want too much more.

He says he has trouble waking up. Probably b/c he can’t sleep. Unfortunatley he gave his meditation tape away to another friend who has similar problems.

Thanks again folks. I only stop by occasionally but am grateful for the response.

Bad press, I believe…there is a lot of it out there!!!! You know, if you read a few articles about ritalin, pretty soon you will come across sensationalistic news about how “terrible” ritalin is and how it “causes” kids to smoke and do drugs, stunts their growth…blah, blah, blah. All I can say, is, so far, we have not experienced OURSELVES any of these bad things. Some weight issues, but they are easily taken care of with proper diet and timing. For us…my daughter…this has been a very helpful medicine with a minimal amount of side effects over a fairly long time.

my daughter (8 yrs) started out on ritalin - bec the lowest dose of concerta is 18 mg….so Dr wanted her on a smaller dose - so we started w/ ritalin for last month - just yesterday I started on her concerta. Dr said I could start it when I’d gotten her up to 15-20 mg of ritalin per day - and I had w/ no issues. I have noticed no negative side effects w/ ritalin (which is exact same thing as concerta except concerta is a time released dose.

If you wanna hang out you’ve got to take her out.

If you wanna get down, down on the ground.

If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues.

When your day is done and you wanna run.

Don’t forget this fact, you can’t get it back.
