My 15 yr. old son seems to have plateaued on 54mg. concerta which he takes for ADHD. He is has been on this dose for almost 2 yrs. and has grown in size to about 130+lbs. Concerta doesn’t go higher than 54mg. He is slipping in his school work and I am really seeing the impulsivity over spring break. He is LD in reading. We keep asking, “Did you take your pill?” I never want to up a dose more than what is needed, but some of the behavior is difficult to ignore. Does anyone have an older child with a similar situation?
Re: concerta plateau
Yes, you may be right. We have an appt. at the end of the month. It just scares me a bit to up the dose. As I’m sure you know it’s always finding the balance.I read a bit about straterra. It sounds iffy at best. We were on Adderall before and seemed that after a while he became depressed and the coming down at the end of the day was really awful. He was moody, negative and mean to everyone. Now, at 15, he wants to drive. The perils of having a teen with ADHD are frightening…even though I know we are doing the right thing. He is very successful in many ways.
Re: concerta plateau
My son is a much better driver on his meds than off. He was on 10 mg of dexedrine when he took his drivers exam and he passed first try. Compared to his ADD siblings who aren’t on meds they are the ones with tickets…he doesn’t have any. We tried Strattera on both our sons and it was a major bust.
a reduction in dopamine is what causes Parkinson disease
A reduction of dopamine is what causes Parkinson’s disease and it isn’t “ritalin that causes a reduction in dopamine” it is the chemical MPTP used in manufacturing illegal drugs that are contaminated with MPTP and in herbicides such as paraquat which is chemically related to MPTP. Any exposure to MPTP can cause neurological problems down the road..
Parkinson’s disease proceeds with the progressive deterioration of the substantia nigra resulting in reduced dopamine, which the body needs to, sustain normal movement. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that links the substantia nigra and the corpus striatum, and has been found to inhibit or control motoric movement instigated by the substantia nigra and occurring in the corpus striatum.
In addition, it has been hypothesized that bradykinesia is a result of damage to the dopamine neurotransmitters of the connections between the substantia nigra and the corpus striatum, allowing excessive nerve impulses to travel to the limbs resulting in the tremors and rigidity observed in patients with Parkinson disease
For approximately 85 percent of the patients who develop signs of Parkinson’s such as a reduced ability to control voluntary motor movements (Bradykinesia), rigidity in muscles and joints of the body, unsteady posture and tremors, the cause is idiopathic, or unknown. However, some individuals on antipsychotic drugs such as Thoraxine, Loxitane, and Haldol will develop a secondary parkinsonism which disappears when the drug is decreased or discontinued.
Reserpine is a drug used to reduce high blood pressure, and when given in a high dose depletes dopamine in the brain, causing secondary parkinsonism. This secondary parkinsonism is reversible when the Reserpine dosage is decreased or withdrawn (Zamula, E. 1992).
A strong correlation with Parkinson’s disease has been found with the chemical MPTP in both illegal use of drugs contaminated with MPTP and in herbicides such as paraquat which is chemically related to MPTP. In Quebec, Canada the incidence of parkinsonism was seven times higher than in other areas where herbicides containing MPTP were not predominantly used.
People in particular professions such as car mechanics that have been exposed to carbon monoxide, welders and miners who have been exposed to manganese and others with mercury or carbon disulfide in the manufacturing of rubber have shown symptoms of parkinsonism (Zamula, E. 1992).
Re: a reduction in dopamine is what causes Parkinson disease
way to go pattim, after reading other posting from “ball” i hope that you finally found a way to shut him up!
Re: a reduction in dopamine is what causes Parkinson disease
awe shucks…Thanks… I just want to share what I know and if I help someone that is great..
Talk to the Dr. perhaps he can give him an 18mg + 54mg together to give him the boost. My daughter was recently bumped up to 54mg as she had also plateaued on 36mg. The other thought I had was to switch him to Adderall which is a different type of stimulant.
