Hello. Some of you know me because I’ve been posting here for a while. I am extending my tutoring hours and would be interested in connecting with any students/families out there who could use the services I can provide.I am presently located in the Maryland suburbs, just outside the Capital Beltway. I can do local tutoring, and will also offer help by email and/or distance education for anyone who would like this kind of assistance.I am qualified and experienced, having BA Honours, BSc, and MA in Education, as well as seventeen years’ tutoring experience.I offer tutoring in three subject areas: reading, math, and French language.Reading: I use a program which mirrors the recommendations of the NIH/NIHCD report. I work on three strands, phonics/linguistics, oral guided reading, and comprehension. In the phonics/linguistics strand, I work on speech, segmenting, and blending, as well as written work; the oral/auditory work comes before the written and guides it. In the guided oral reading, I use carefully sequenced materials that lead the student gradually and steadily from one level to the next. I work on both oral and written vocabulary and grammar development. In comprehension, I stress thought and discussion over filling in workbooks, although I do some written work after the student has mastered enough written skills to make it productive. I also work on handwriting skills. Spelling is covered as part of the phonics/linguistics strategy. Students of all ages and levels can benefit from a program that is built around their individual needs.Because I do not use franchised programs, I do not have to pay to support other people’s head offices and advertising, so I can keep my fees comparatively low.Math: I work on fundamental mathematical concepts and problem-solving. I will tutor advanced math (pre-cal and up) to students in any school. I will tutor high school algebra and geometry to homeschool students, and will tutor elementary students in both reading and math according to their needs.French: I am fluent in French (native of Quebec) and have a degree in foreign languages and linguistics. I will work on vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, up to fourth year of high school or second year university. I prefer to work either with homeschool students or with students who are simultaneously registered in a school or college class in French.
