Dr. Harold Levingson

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,
I am a homeschooler of a 2 boys 6 & 9. My 9 yr old has
CAPD as well as dyslexia, dysgraphia, eye teaming problems. We have done Fastforward and noted an improvement. We are currently doing Lindamood-Bell.
I just stumbled across a book by Dr. Levingson.
It seems to good to be true. My question is; Is anyone familier with him or treated any of your children. Any information will be greatly appreciated as i am a skeptic by nature.
Thanks Nicole

It is too good to be true, IMHO as many of us have found no magic cure for LD’s except lots of proper intervention that is consistently presented.

I agree all the claims he makes do seem to be too good to be true, but I wonder if he’s on to something with the balance and coordination issues being caused by an inner-ear dysfunction? The more I research his book the more that part seems a possibility. I wonder if I could just see an ENT to have that looked into?

It’s certainly possible for some coordination problems to be related to inner-ear dysfunction. An ENT could check for physical abnormalities.

However, what is more likely in a child is that an auditory processing disorder has disturbed vestibular development — motor coordination, balance, rhythm, timing. You can find out more about this at http://www.neuroacoustics.com. If you are not familiar with auditory processing disorders, then http://pages.cthome.net/cbristol/ has some good information about CAPD.

Dr. Levinson’s approach basically is to prescribe massive doses of over-the-counter drugs such as motion sickness pills. I would consider this a last resort therapy at best.

Hello!

I am the mother of a 9 year old boy who is struggling with reading, writing, and all the other signs that go along with Dyslexia. Until two weeks ago we were lost and frustrated about what to do. I guess we are still confused but atleast we know there is a name that goes with his struggles and that we have some options and not just continue to “let him grow out of it”. We are still in public.

Anyway - I am reading Dr. Levingson’s material and it is interesting. Another book that is equally interesting is “The Gift of dyslexia” by Ronald D. Davis They offer orientation counseling in the book, on video an in person. The in person counseling is $2,400 for one week. The book and video serious is more affordable. Of couse we should be skeptical of anything that costs that much money - but isn’t it worth looking into?

Also they agree that Dr. Levingson’s approach is trying to create orientation and that is what the drugs seem to do.

I would be intersted to know how long your son has been diagnosed and what home school materials you are using and if you feel they are working.

Thanks

Contrary to what you might expect, I did havea student on my caseload (speech therapist) who did go see Dr. Levinson and has had great success. But it is not for every child. It depends on the origin or the problem. It appears you are dealing with issues stemming out of sensory integration dysfunction esp. praxis (coordination abilities). Vestibular issues are related to the above and I would recommend an evalution by an occupational therapist rather than an audiologist, its more functional. A team or a speech therapist and an occupational therapist (the right ones) could do wonders for you without drugs. Any questions feel free to email me.
