Scottish Rite Dyslexia Video Program

Dear Dee, I used Scottish Rite Dyslexia Video Program with my daughter, Mary. Mary is 8 years old and ADHD with poor phonological awareness(8%). We are enrolled with Seton’s Special Services and acquired the workbooks and tapes through their offices.

I know they are well thought of - Mary’s speech therapist thought they were highly effective. I thought they were somewhat dry though and it was difficult to get my ADHD daughter to watch them (even, if I broke up the time we watch them in ), so before we finished the month’s worth of tapes Seton sent I called Stevenson Language Program (and I am using their materials on a trial basis) . We have worked with them for 3 weeks now. Mary appears to be learning, but if her gains are not retained (poor visual memory). I will go back to using Scottish Rite. Stevenson’s material seem to be geared toward the struggeling reader and not the serious dyslexic. Her self esteem has really suffered as a result of her reading delay and my husband and I intend to aggressively treat the problem, before anymore damage is done.

-as an aside a Seton’s staffer comment when I changed programs was it is dry but what else is there?

I have bought the book Reading Reflex and I am interested in your opinion on this one? I am trying to make head and tail of this. I have a 10 year old with dyslexia and dyscalculia and a 5 year who seems to be okay but I thought I would try Reading Reflex with her… believe its a bit late with 10 year old what do you think?

I have used RR for around 2 years. It has helped my 2 sons who have difficulty reading. (but I am still seeking help - that is why the Scottish Rite program questions). I taught my youngest to read with RR and she does great, no learning differences though. My 3rd son was taught with RR and also does well.

I love the simple method of RR, but I have been frustrated with my own implementation of the program for the children who have difficulties.

I wish it had better lesson plans for me to follow and more support material. I think it is a great way to understand our written language. I did see some improvements in my 12yos when I worked with him last year, but I have mostly been working with my 9yos this year.

He is reading a 2nd grade reader with lots of errors, sight reading rather than decoding and tracking problems. But he is reading!!! I continue to use the RR correction method and review the “sound picture” lessons with him.

It’s never too late to learn to read better. If your daughter skims through PG quickly, get a more complete phonics program that works on analyzing multisyllable words (a huge weak point for most students).

What specifically do you think it’s too late for? Understanding phonics or reading better or using a program that starts from the beginnign or…?

My understanding is that adults can be taught to read with PG.
