I am giving serious consideration to private tutoring. Can anyone suggest a ballpark figure for current rates I might expect to charge. I know some clinics can run in the $60-$90 per hour range, I don’t really know what private practitioners who work from their homes (and hold credentials) may be charging. I want to set rates that are fair to the client and fair to myself. I would love to hear from private practitioners and/or parents who have availed themselves of such services. It is fine to e-mail me privately.
Re: Private Tutoring
I pay $50/hour to a former special ed teacher. This is in Escondido, CA and she has plenty of business.
Re: Private Tutoring
Thanks to all who have e-mailed or posted so far. Things are about what I would expect.
Re: Private Tutoring
Around me tutoring goes anywhere from $30 - 60$ an hour. Upper math level courses like calculus tutors are even charging $90/hour.
You could always call your local Sylvan or Huntingdon Learning Center and find out what they charge as it would offer insight into what their market research says the average parent is willing to pay.
Re: Private Tutoring
I think that there a lot of children and parents being taken advantage of paying these high prices. I pay $25.00 for a Masters prepared teacher who is trained in a multisensory reading education program. She offers a lower price because she wants to help the children and we can afford to use her more often then. I find that people who really want to help children offer lower prices.
I am beginning to believe that there is a conspiracy going on. The public schools will not offer education in the summer for these children in the methods that they need so therefore parents have no other choice than to pay high prices.
I am training myself on a lot of methods so I can help these children and offer an affordable service. Parents of special needs children have a lot of expenses and should not be taken advantage of
Re: Private Tutoring
I work on a sliding scale but I have found one gets what they pay for too. I don’t feel I am taking advantage of anyone because I remediate kids. I want to help the kids but I also have a $10K college debt staring at me and I am just starting graduate school…. not to mention the thousands of dollars I have in training from Lindamood-Bell and other methodologies.

Re: Private Tutoring-college students
I am sure that it depends on each childs needs as to the expertise of the tutor. I have been fortunate a couple times by getting college students Jrs. who are majoring in educations.
The first sweetheart we had was going into her Sr. year for audiology and I had to beg her to take money because she thought the experience was good for her. Anyway I paid $20.00/hr.
The second one was a wonderful young man going into his Sr. year in education here again he wouldn’t tell me how much to pay. He wanted a pie. I also paid him $20/hr and he seemed happy and I hope he will do it again this summer.
I certainly am not in anyway trying to under pay these students but, I really had no clue of the going rate. Please understand also that the area we live in pays low wages so, $20/hr is good around here.
Hi Anita,
My son has been tutored once a week for two years now by a wonderful woman who is also a teacher at a private school for kids with learning disabilities, mostly in the area of speech/language disabilities. I pay her $40 an hour, which seems to be the going price for tutors with special ed. credentials.
