I have nephew who is in danger of failing 7th grade. He has a siezure disorder (controlled by meds), ADD (the innatentive type) and is very shy. He has always struggled through school but to date has never failed. His mom works and it would be difficult to homeschool but she would like to know if there are any other options for her son. He has an iep and gets extended time for tests and goes to the resource room for help. She lives 30 minutes outside Rochester, if anyone has any information for her I would appreciate it. It has been a very difficult year for her and her son. Thank You, Liz
Re: questions about homeschooling
Homeschooling can be very traditional or very flexible, and as it becomes more popular there are more options. A 7th grader who is failing is almost sure to be weak in basic skills, and I’d suggest that she plan to simply go back to a point at which he can work comfortably, and start building from there. I don’t care how much help you get from resource room, you can’t do 7th grade work with 3rd grade skills. If you stop wasting time trying to “keep up” and instead spend your time building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills, you’ll be much better off in the long run.
I’ve seen some very good reviews of Switched On Schoolhouse for ADD kids- that’s a complete curriculum that the kids do on the computer. He might be able to do more of the work on his own with that type of program, and that could help out a working mom. She’d probably still need to do additional work on areas that he is struggling with, but they would have the freedom to work at his pace.
Hope this helps.

She lives 30 minutes outside of Rochester in what state?
Even though she works she can still homeschool. There are not set hours that homeschooling needs to be done in. She can homeschool after work or on weekends, in the evenings etc. My child has similar problems without the seizure disorder and had modifications on her IEP which didn’t matter a bit. She went to a semi private school for LD children and did even worse. I am a single parent who homeschools. I had to. I could not let my child fail any longer in the public school system. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do to get our kids what they need. Please let me know what state your friend lives in, as we might be neighbors.
