How can you modify for the Learning Disabled Students in the regular education classroom without them feeling too different from the other students or so that the other students do not feel they are getting “special” treatment? Thank you for your input.
One of the most basic modifications you can make is to preferentially seat the student in a place where he/she can best focus. This can be as simple as putting that student in the first row nearest to the teacher’s desk, close to the board,
overhead, or whatever. Sometimes these students are poor notetakers, yet to supply them with notes that have been zeroxed will draw attention to them. One possible solution is to e-mail the notes, using a yahoo address as opposed to your usual address in case the student’s friends come over on a Saturday night and try to send obnoxious messages.
Testing formats can be modified so as to not draw attention to the changes. The multiple choice items can spaced further apart, as can the vocabulary test items so that you can actually give fewer of them.
There are many other examples…….feel free to e-mail me if you want more!
