math and spelling

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I wanted to add that I recented started this new game with the kids regarding spelling words and math facts. I have kids 8yrs w/ ld, 5yrs gifted?, and 4yrs old.
We are often in the car driving to and from therapies or activities. I tell them the rules before we start. example of a rule, every time we pass a red car say 3+2=5. Whenever I make a turn spell “girl”, whenever I stop, say 4+3=7.
This is working for the younger ones better than the older one but that is to be expected. Nonetheless the ld child is exposed to it a bit. Sometimes we play a password game. In order to enter a door in the house they have to answer one of my questions 2+2= etc

For second grade math were are using Investigations in Number Data & Space. This is a very hands on program that allows for a good math understanding rather than drills, which my child had a very difficult time with last year. We used Saxon last year and hated it. We both love Investigations and the math facts are coming on their own. They have a web site. The program is not cheap, but IMO worth it. Last year my son (adhd, capd) would fight me every single day with math. Now he keeps his own math journal and I find him making up his own problems and working on them in his journal. Please remember that this is our first year in it. However, I did do a great deal of research before making the switch. Good luck.
