has anyone else had to begin a homeschool during a school
year? I have an 8 year old dd. I am not ok with how the
conference went and the style in which they are handling
her. My goal is to homeschool her until I can get a handle on her
disability myself. -NVLD- I have given the school all the info
I have found—they diagnosed her–I do not feel that any
progress has been made and my dd is not happy.
The big question is how do I start? What do I do now?
I will still have a 4th grader dd in the school. She is doing very well
and loves it. I do not want it to be a negitive decision for anyone—
My girl asks me to homeschool so I now that is not a problem.
thank you for anyone who has some info. CD
Re: now that I need to where do I start
Go to any library and check out some books on homeschooling. Patchwork Days is one. Do a search under homeschoolers and the name of your state and you’ll find some sites that will connect you to other homeschooling families in your area.
If you do decide to homeschool, don’t be afraid. Your daughter will learn plenty and probably plenty more than she’d learn in school. And she’ll likely be much happier too.
If I had one wish, I’d wish that I had homeschooled my dyslexic son. School made us both very unhappy.
Re: now that I need to where do I start
Thank you for your replies!! We made the descion to pull her out of school. It was not as hard as I had always thought it would be. It makes me realize how right this descion is for her right now!!
She is so happy. We started monday and we have spent this week just de stressing a bit. She is very self motivated about learning so I feel that she will be getting more education than she was getting during her at school day. If there is one thing I have learned with my NVLD dd is that I get no where with her if she is not emotionally ok. I am so excited about having her home now!!

Re: now that I need to where do I start
You sound so kind and motivated that I’m sure you will do fine! If your child wants to learn then get direction from her. She can let you know what she is interested in and you can go from there. Good luck! Jan
Sounds like you’ve got a school system w/ a psych who can at least figure out NVLD — but the folks in the classrooms just aren’t ready for it. NVLD kiddos can really take an emotional as well as educational battering in this situation so it is worth *following through* on this and sitting down and making a timeline for actually making this happen, and actively seeking suppport… and specifically looking for the kind of support that will work for you (lots of well-meaning supportive folks may be like the well-meaning teachers who just don’t really understand what your daughter needs). There are lots and lots of different ways to approach homeschooling.
http://www.gomilpitas.com/homeschooling/index.html is a wonderful starting point and place to keep returning :)
Take a good long look at what homeschooling will entail — but realize you do NOT have to do a perfect job — actually it could be pretty pathetic and still be better than what may well be happening now. If it’s “doing no harm” you’re probably ahead of the game.
