How do i get accomodations for my dyslexic daughter? She needs accomodations for the ged and the sat. I got my other homeschooled daughter into our university fairly easily. This, however, is another matter. I have been told that a counselor needs to reccomend the accmodations but that school counselor is *me*. so they won’t accept that. Any suggestions? Thanks
Re: sats...accomodations...HELP
There are a great many hoops to jump through for accommodations for the SAT so start early. Our school’s counselor was very, very organized and spent lots of time with the details. You don’t just get a blanket “okay” for accommodations — you have to get the specific recommendation for the specific accommodation. We had our IEPs written starting when the kids wer ein ninth grade to include whatever they might need ont he SATs for that.
There’s an article in LD In Depth in the Postsecondary section (http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/postsecondary/index.html) that has a slightly dated article — maybe there haven’t been changes in it.
But the main thing is to start early — and to recognize that SATs may still not be a true measure of her capabilities, and look for schools that understand that.

Why don’t you contact the SAT company, Princeton Review, in New Jersey and see what they say. Try contacting your local school board child study team and ask them what you can do. Finally, you can try the state department of education. A private psychologist’s or doctor’s diagnosis is good only for getting services and a 504 for college, not the SATs.

Re: sats...accomodations...HELP
I have taken her to our pediatrician. He told me that he couldn’t do anything for her. That his reccomendations would count for nothing. Although he was very kind and supportive since his own daughter struggled with this in high school. We are currently investigating neurofeedback as a remedy or at least another attempt to find some help. Our community college has been very helpful. She is taking classes there now. She has taken classes and has received her nurses assistant license. Yay!! There was a time when I didn’t think that would be possible. If she stays in the community college program for lpn, she need not take the sat. I try to tell her that the sat is just a number that reflects how people did on a certain day. It is a hoop to jump through and we are very, very good at jumping hoops….aren’t we all?? Thank you for all replies.

If your daughter is currently enrolled in the C.C. go talk to a counselor about it. You probably need educational testing and their learning disability department may be able to do that.

Hmm, interesting. I’d say then have your daughter tested by an educational psychologist. Even though my own school was enrolled in school, it was necessary for him to be retested by an educational psychologist to receive accomodations.
The easiest way to get accomodations on the SAT is to have your family doctor sign off on the application that your daughter has attentional issues. Some family doctors are very willing to do this.
Accomodations for the GED is another matter. For answers there, I’d say get in touch with a counselor at your nearest local community college. Community colleges usually are the main point for offering the GED and I’m sure their counselors have helped people get accomodations before.
