Hi,
My 9 year old son was jsut diagnosed with LD, because he is so delayed in so many areas, the dr. didn’t want to “pinhole” him in to one category, so, we basically have a list of weaknesses, and are going from there.
I have been homeschooling him for the past 3 years, and I am looking for anything and everything that can help him. He severely delayed in handwriting skills, written expression, reading, and moderatly in math, and verbal expression.
I am planning on switching curricula with him, basically because he shuts down when he sees textbooks, and worksheets. So, I have been thinking of using Sonlight with him. Have any of you used it? I need all the help, and or suggestions as possible.
A little more background, he is the middle child of 5 boys, and was severely speech delayed, is goin to OT now, and has in the past for Sensory Integration issues. He is going to start back to speech soon to help him get his “r’s”.
Thanks
angie
It sounds like he has some apaxia which can affect motor output and speech. (It affects the motor functioning of the mouth muscles which affects speech)
I think interactive metronome is a great program for this type of difficulty as it addresses motor planning. Some children with significant problems might benefit from doing The listening program or some occupational therapy first as it can be very difficult.
I found that it helped my son greatly. If I were to do it again I would do the listening program first as it addresses balance and vestibular issues which was a stumbling block for my son and caused him to need an excessive number of treatments.
You can search on the internet for The Listening Program and purchase it to do at home. It requires special earphones that are not always included in the program.

You really need to address his underlying deficits so that he has the foundation needed to allow him to learn academics.
