Hi all,
I’ve just decided to homeschool my 6 yr old son. He is apraxic and APD. We went to a neuro psyc for an evaluation and will have the complete report soon. He has problems with working memory. He attended the Dev. Delay Pre- K since 3 1/2 yrs old. He visited K this year and returned to Pre K for the afternoon. We were planning on holding him back anyway because of his speech. But now PS says we need to hold him back.
So my question is what curriculum would you use for someone like my son?
I am currently using Reading Reflex with him and trying to decide to go with IM or audiblox. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated too.
Blessings,
Diane in La.
my curriculum outlines available for the asking
I have saved down several long posts that I have typed up over the past year about teaching reading and writing from the ground up. I don’t follow a specific lockstep program, rather an interactive approach with a variety of options according to need.
If you’re interested in these outlines, just double-click on my name and email me with a request. Absolutely no strings attached, although iA would appreciate feedback.
Re: Curriculum for 6 yr old with APD
I would start with audiblox and do IM when he was a little older. 6 is just too young for IM but audiblox is especially good for younger kids. I do audiblox with my 4 year old. It was originally developed as a preschool program but you could do it with any age.
You may also want to look into The listening program as many use if for exactly these issues. You could buy your own set of CDs (do a search on the internet) for around $350 and do it yourself.
We had great results with reading reflex.
Sounds like you’re tackling the problem areas — look for a curriculum that plays on his strengths for hte rest of it. What parts of his “working memory” work best? And whatever you choose, help him build a real foundation of knowledge so that he’s got good background to “hook” new information on. Spending a lot of time reviewing and building the good foundation can really pay off.
