Just Lost Kindergarten

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son who is 4 turning 5 in December was in Kindergarten. Within 1 month, all the kids call him the “bad kid”. No one wants to play with him. I have just pulled him from school. My heart is broken. I realize one more year will not hurt because of his birthday. My son has no social skills at all. I went to school with him to observe him and I came home and cried. I am having an exceptionally hard time getting him assessed or even looked at. Im frustrated and angry. I could really use someone who is or has gone through the same thing that I can talk to. I live in BC, Canada. I am a great emailer and in desperate need of reassurance. If you can help please email me. Thanks to everyone.

…You’ll get more responses as they get more traffic : ) You might even refer to Canada in your subject line. As far as reassurance, I’d say you did the right thing removing him, before he starts believing he is the BAD kid. Also, you now have a whole year to get things in place for him before you need to worry about kindergarten. By that time, you can find the help he needs and he should be much more successful in whatever classroom he ends up in.

I truly understand some of what you may be experiencing. I have an 8 year old son who is as sweet, smart and adorable as you would ever wish for in a child. He has mild ADD and lacks good social skills. So I have had years of crying over the fact that my child is misunderstood and sometimes alienated by his peers. From the time he was in Preschool he has had difficulty communicating with other children and thank God for the help and advice I received from Speech Therapists, and some (not all) Doctors and friends, he was able to start kindergarten on time and now is doing well in 3rd grade. But still every day presents a new challenge and sometimes new frustrations and tears. There is hope…my son has gotten much better with lots of effort and love. My husband and I are constantly trying to find ways to help him build his self confidence and succeed in school and with his social skills. Please email me and we can share some stories and maybe some of the things I’ve done that have helped my son might be something of interest to you. Good luck and I hope to hear from you.

You might start off with the Learnig Disability Association of Canada or the BC chapter (www.ldasvi.bc.ca). They have a lot of resources and can assist you in getting referrals and resources.
J-K is a very beneficial year for a lot of kids. It is often where early identification of learning problems takes place. The school barods have a lot of resources at their disposal and can do psychological assessments at no cost to you. To get it done privately can be over $1000. They also have speech therapists and occupational therapists. Plus the structured environment can really help a child with problems. Why wait another year? The earlier you identify the issues and start addressing them, the better off your child will be and the more piece of mind you will have. Reach out and get the help you and your child need.
