Strategies for promoting social skills

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to promote social skills &/or skills aquisition for a seven year old second grade girl? This child has speech problems that makes it hard for others to understand what she’s saying.

I might could help to suggest a few things. For one thing, this child probley has very low self-esteem. If you could work on first building her self-esteem up then maybe she could grow socially. To build her self-eteem, you could let her do things in the class for you. If the other children see that you accept her then they might accept her too. You could try to build on her strong points. Find out what she likes and what she is good at and start from there. If there are any clubs at school or after school porgrams try to get her involved. Talk to other teachers about things she can do for them in the classroom to help out. Maybe getting her a peer tutor to help her out around school could help her socially too.

My son was speech delayed and has been in speech therapy since 4 yrs. old. He still doesn’t talk much to people besides me, his Dad and those he knows very well. I think when kids repeatly hear from others they don’t understand them we can’t expect them to want to talk alot.

My son excells in sports and other kids almost idealize him for this talent and he is very popular but still quiet.

I agree you need to try and find this child’s strong point and direct her in that direction and give lots of praise. The other kids will relate to her strengths.
