Hi,I hope someone might have a suggestion for me. I am considering tutoring and going back to teaching special ed. after years of working in non-academic jobs. I’ve tried working as a teaching assistant in the past but felt awkward telling the lead teacher that I didn’t remember how to plan lessons and units.Does anyone know how I might get some practice planning and implementing lessons again so that I can feel confident going back into the classroom again?Thanks.J.
I thought once you knew how to ride a bike you never forgot. Interesting. How many years did you actually teach?Schools and classrooms have changed a great deal so not to worry. Anything you were doing years ago, you probably shouldn’t be doing now anyway.Do you have a hobby? Something you really enjoy doing? For practice, link up with your local adult school. Teach your hobby to get comfortable with being back in the classroom. Does your area have day camps for children? Offer to work in the day camp setting or teach one week enrichment sessions for local day camps or schools. Teach a writing workshop or a reading workshop. Go to your local library and offer to host a summer reading program for children. Do any volunteer work around children that requires you to structure the children’s time in a meaningful way because that’s basically all teaching is. Structuring children’s time in a meaningful way.Or take your first idea and do that for a year. There is a GREAT shortage of tutors in today’s world. More and more children are being taught at a level that is not developmentally correct for them and the only shot they’ve got at being successful with the curriculum is to be tutored. Put up a sign in your local library offering your services as a tutor. And put up the sign offering a summer workshop for children having trouble in school. I’m sure your library would be thrilled to be able to offer such a service to its families over the summer.Good luck.
