We worked on his writing during his tutoring time last sememster, and he has made great progress, but he spelling is something he still struggles with. His course load and my time constraints make it difficult for me to do much within tutoring. Can anyone suggest a home program he could use to improve his spelling? Most of the things I’ve seen are geared to work within a school or lab setting, and he really wants to work independently. Either computer-based or audiotapes would probably be best. He’s very motivated, and I’d really like to help. Pat

Check out the “Teaching Reading” and “Homeschooling” bulletin boards on this website. I’ve seen something called Spelling Power recommended, although I don’t know it personally. People on those boards have oodles of programs, and some would be suitable for HS/college.

Pat I think what I’d do if I were him would be to get a book like Rudginski’s _How to Teach Spelling_, which has lots more words than most spelling programs and goes *much* further, and just start at the beginning and work through it — practicing words and patterns (HTTS is very phonetically based, & used by lots of LD teachers) until they’re mastered.
