Texas requires candidates for Teacher Certification to pass an “ExCET” test. I have a friend who has a master’s degree in art from a major university. He was diagnosed as severely dyslexic in his childhood (and, of course, he still is.) He has taught art at the high school level successfully for the past 3 years. He has failed the ExCET test (with alternative asssessment, i.e. “extra time”) four times. He has been told that if he fails to pass the test, he will lose his job. Is anyone aware of exceptions, options, assistance for this fine young teacher.
