ear plugs

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi! I am a 32 year old student who has been diagnosed with multiple cognitive disorders as well as a learning disability. I was hoping someone could recommend “ear plugs” that I could use while studying. Most of the ear plugs I have tried don’t work very well for me because of the severe sensitivity I have to sounds and this keeps me from being able to focus.

I have tried the swimmers wax and that seems to work the best, but if anyone can help me with a better suggestion I’d be so grateful.

Thanks in advance and plan to keep coming back. I’ve known about LDOnline for a long time but just recently discovered the discussion boards :)

This may sound odd (and maybe you’ve tried this already), but you may want to check out sporting supply stores. They sell earplugs for use at fireing ranges, and thus may have better sound attenuation than those you can get at your local drug-store. I once looked at them for use at an outdoor rock festival. The only downside is that they’re rather expensive.

Good luck in your studies!

Have you tried 3M1100 ear plugs, with headphones added, perhaps?
Does white noise help?

Tyger - Are the earplugs big and bulky? Thanks for the suggesting. If I can pull myself off of the lazy-boy-chair today (day off) I will go to Big 5 and check them out!

Thanks again. Susi

I am not familiar with 3M100 earplugs Sue. Are they like the type that hunters use as described in Tyger’s post?

White noise does seem to help me at times. I am considering seeing an audiologist before classes start next semester. I’ve heard about some device that’s similar to hearing aids but puts out “white noise”…..Have you heard about these?

Thanks for your help! Susi

Nope. The ones I saw looked like heavy-duty foam earplugs. Don’t know if they’re any better than the ones you can get for 50 cents, though. Would assume they’d be better.

Hello my name is Jacob. Go to WALMART, go to the hunting section and get a pair of shooting range ear protectors.

You put these on and I promiss, you will not hear a thing:0)

Here is a different thought. I am also bothered by noise. A white noise machine or a white noise tape with headphones might in fact work better, it blocks out background noise without irritating the ear. Type white noise machine in online and stuff should come up.
