Does anyone have any suggestions for improving a college sophomore’s comprehension of textbooks and tests? His decoding skills are very good, although he would like to read faster. Any recommendations as to specific materials, ideas or programs would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephanie - I have slow visual motor processing as well as central auditory processing deficits…..in a nutshell it takes me FOREVER to read. The best tricks that I have found are the old fashioned things –- quiet study area, ear plugs, and taking text notes.
Taking the notes makes the reading process longer but it helps me to retain the information better. I highlight the important facts and then copy them down.
For me, there’s no fast way to read. I won’t comprehend a thing if I just “look” at the words. Reading is one of my favorite things to do and the most difficult too.
I use a C-pen when I read which helps me to look up words a lot fast v. using an old fashioned dictionary. That may help him. I’ve heard mixed reviews from people on their C-pens but mine is great. I use the 600 and it’s awesome.
